  • University of Arts and Design Linz invites applications for a full-time position as Professor of “Design Research and Design Theory” at the Institute of Space and Design starting as soon as possible according to Section 98 (1) of the Austrian Universities Act (UG 2002). This position is limited to five years but can be extended to permanent employment following an evaluation. The monthly salary of €5,437.70 (before tax and deductions) is based on Section 49 (1) of the collective bargaining agreement. A higher salary is possible depending on the applicant's professional qualifications.

    The aim of the newly created Professor of “Design Research and Design Theory” is to develop, work on, and establish research questions at the intersection of theory and practice. The future position holder of this new, currently developing field shall offer interdisciplinary, cross-institutional teaching for the broad spectrum of design disciplines at University of Arts and Design Linz (including Fashion & Technology, Industrial Design, Postdigital Lutherie, Visual Communication, and in the teacher training subjects).

    A comprehensive theoretical examination of relevant, current design practice is intended to lead to new positions, perspectives, and future-oriented research fields, as well as new insights and inspiration for design disciplines.

    The professor shall be responsible for supplementing the already existing practice-led research knowledge and competencies at University of Arts and Design Linz with design research and design theory, as well as increasing the university's participation in the international debate on design research and design theory. It is also expected that the future position holder actively initiate and establish supervising collaborations on Bachelor, Master, and PhD projects as well as in practice-led teaching and research.

    We are looking for someone in the field of design research and design theory who has experience in design practice and a direct connection to the fields of action resulting from this practice. Theory and practice are to be approached in the teaching and research as equivalent and equally important aspects of design. This is intended to enable students to view their practices in this intersection of theory and practice.

    Essential Qualifications:

  • University degree, preferably in the field of design
  • Completed doctoral or PhD degree
  • Several years of critical engagement with design practice
  • Research work in interdisciplinary design research projects that combine theory and practice and connect with the contemporary international debate
  • International publication activity in the field of design research and design theory in English, and experience with peer-review processes
  • Excellent command of English
  • Proof of university teaching experience
  • Demonstrable gender and diversity competence
  • Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in supervising doctoral or PhD students
  • Involvement in establishing collaborations within and outside the university
  • Cooperation in practice-led teaching and research
  • Connections and exchange with international design theory networks
  • Good command of German and the ability to teach flexibly in German or English
  • Experience in working on academic committees and boards
  • Experience in acquiring research grants or third-party funding
  • Committed cooperation in the committees and working groups of the university
