Job description

Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER)

ISER is a research department in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Essex. ISER's research excellence is demonstrated by its outstanding publication record and substantial research funding. ISER employs scholars of international prominence publishing in the top journals in their fields. Information is the lifeblood of ISER; all ISER personnel are responsible for its security to the organisations and individuals who provide it. Whilst ISER must abide by the University of Essex information security policies, ISER is required to conform to a far stricter Information Security regime due to the data that we process and the research that we undertake. ISER's policies and procedures therefore supersede those of the University.

Duties of the Role

The role of the ITSM is to lead ISER's information security management to ensure that ISER maintains its ISO27001 certification. The ITSM is required to manage this within a complex funding environment and within the constraints of the University environment. They are required to engage with Principal Investigators to define information security needs, risks and strategies for managing information. They will be responsible for working alongside and line managing ISER's Systems Manager to ensure ISER's IT infrastructure and operations are sufficiently robust to maintain ISO certification whilst modernising and developing systems and processes to meet user needs.

A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the attached job pack.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and will hold ISO27001 Lead Auditor or Implementer certification or have the ability to achieve certification given appropriate training whilst in post.

They will have proven experience in information security management and should demonstrate evidence of experience in identifying and specifying information technology needs for a complex organisation. Excellent communication skills are required, including the ability to interpret and analyse complex needs, to describe technical language to a “non-technical” audience, and to engage with senior management, colleagues and external stakeholders.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.

To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
