Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Center for New North Carolinians (CNNC) promotes access and integration for immigrants and refugees in North Carolina by bridging newcomer populations with existing communities through direct service provision, research and training.

Position Summary

The Immigration Services Staff Attorney will lead the Afghan Legal Assistance project within the Immigration Services program of CNNC. This position will provide civil legal assistance to eligible Afghan evacuees residing in North Carolina and represent them before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, primarily in applications for Temporary Protected Status, Special Immigrant Visas, and asylum.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Degree in law from an accredited university and admission to any U.S. state bar is required.
  • Excellent legal, communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills are required.
  • The position requires a strong record of cultural competence and cross- cultural communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years experience in immigration law is preferred.
  • Experience in immigration law is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with interpreters is helpful.
  • Spanish, Arabic, Pashto or Dari language skills.

  • Maintain up to date knowledge of the ever-evolving landscape of Afghan legal services, processes, and options by following list serves and attending informational stakeholder meetings.
