  • Position Summary:

    As the Patty Ice Manager, you will serve with the entire Nanook Recreation team to help provide outstanding facilities, programs and service to students, faculty, staff and community. Each day you will work directly with customers, skaters, parents and associations. As the Manager, you'll be asked to keep detailed records for scheduling, financials and rink maintenance. You will need to train the staff to operate independently without direct supervision. We hope the new Manager will bring fresh ideas and help carry the rink into the next decade with a sustainable fiscal model while providing a positive experience for all users.

    Duties:

    1-35Scheduling Coordinator and Fiscal Oversight: Coordinate and schedule daily ice rentals for the Patty Ice Arena. Maintain a public calendar for the facility. Ice customers include: UAF Athletics, state and local hockey organizations, independent user groups, Fairbanks Figure Skating Club, private hockey camps, power skating clinics and more. Work closely with user groups for scheduling and other facility use issues. Ensure completion of all appropriate and required documentation for Facility Use and Protection of Minors. Assist in setting up the facility for special events. Prepare for special events including scheduling and the set up and break down of equipment. Develop promotional programs, in coordination with user groups, to enhance the use of the ice arena. Coordinate the use of the concession stand with volunteer user groups. Fiscal responsibilities: Invoicing community user groups monthly and track payments; bill University departments as needed and follow up to ensure payment via JV''s have been processed. Work closely with Director and Business Manager on budgeting, forecasting and fiscal audits. Lead all purchasing and receipt tracking for ice arena.Essential

    2-25Supervisory: Coordinate employee schedules to ensure coverage for the ice facility that is open up to 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hire, train and evaluate staff as needed throughout the year. Verify that work is being completed safely, accurately and efficiently. Ensure appropriate material, supplies and equipment is available for employees to complete tasks safely. Schedule facility maintenance and repairs as necessary. Provide guidance and training as necessary. Resolve any disputes or complaints that may arise. Liaison between Director and employees. Oversees the yearly or bi-yearly maintenance of the facility. Schedule all work including: ice removal, re- lamping, compressor rebuild, ice building and painting, facility cleanup and any other maintenance projects as needed. Create, maintain policy and procedure documents for all processes; facility and scheduling/fiscal. Looking for process and facility improvement opportunities.Essential

    3-20Shift Work: This position must have the knowledge and ability to operate the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine, ice edger machine and the knowledge to monitor the ice conditions and correct for any difficulties that arise. Assure the proper usage and storage of propane. This position monitors the buildings ice making equipment (Freon system) and water softening equipment. Assures that the buildings occupants follow the facility rules for their safety and to prevent damages to the facility. Address any damage that occurs and facilitate repairs. Oversees the yearly or bi-yearly maintenance of the facility. Schedule all work including: ice removal, re-lamping, compressor rebuild, ice building and painting, facility cleanup and any other maintenance projects as needed. Cleans the boards and glass as needed. Maintain clean and safe access to the facility by cleaning up trash, sweeping and shoveling as necessary. Set up facility for special events as needed.Essential

    4-15Marketing: Market the facility and provide services to the community in a positive and appealing way to existing and potential customers to increase ice rentals and other revenue sources. Assist tournament or event coordinators with local or state sponsored events. Create events to bring attention to the facility. Evaluate performance of different marketing initiatives. Work with the Director on long-term vision for Patty Ice as well as selling advertising space inside the Arena.Essential

    5-5Learn To Skate: Oversee the implementation of learn to skate program including: scheduling all classes, hiring and supervising learn to skate coaches, creating curriculum within ISI guidelines, create promotions and monitor enrollments.Essential

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: The Manager must have the knowledge and ability to coordinate and schedule the ice arena. The person in this position must have extraordinary people skills to interact with and schedule ice times for several user groups. The ice manager position is vital to smooth operating of the facilities. The Manager must have strong abilities to install and maintain a good sheet of ice. Ice depth, smoothness, lines, edges, etc. are all important aspects of this position.

    Preference given to applicants with experience in Max Enterprises/Galaxy and Fusion softwares.

    Ability to works nights and weekends

    Typical Experience:

    Two years of ice arena maintenance experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Required Education or Training:

    Bachelor's degree in physical education, recreation or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Evidence of business acumen needed.

    The position must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license and clean driver's record with regards to DUI.

    This is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
