About This Role:

Responsibilities include servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial industrial air handlers, fan coil units, VAV boxes, recirculation pumps, residential package units, gas-fired boilers, ice machines, and other associated equipment. Candidate should also have the ability to troubleshoot and maintain commercial chillers, compressors, and other associated central plant equipment. Employees are reminded that they represent both the department and the university and are expected to maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance while on duty. The candidate will routinely work with other crafts and will be required to monitor contracted work and provide training to subordinate employees. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These specialists work under the direct supervision of the HVAC/R Supervisor, in the Facilities Maintenance department.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the HVAC/R trade and theory of HVAC/R systems.
  • Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC/R systems.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain gas-fired boilers, and associated equipment.
  • Knowledge of central plant operations, to include commercial chillers and associated equipment.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and be able to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Have knowledge in electrical and plumbing, necessary to adequately diagnose and repair HVAC/R related equipment.
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications.
  • Maintain flexibility and be available for duty during short-notice or urgent situations.
  • Work cooperatively with others and maintain excellent customer service.
  • Work independently with little direction, meeting schedules and timelines.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid Texas driver's license is required.
  • With completion of a technical training program, at least (3) years of experience in the HVAC/R or related field is required. Without the completion of a formal training program, at least (5) years of direct HVAC/R experience is required.
  • Key Competencies:

    The successful candidate shall be knowledgeable in repairing and servicing HVAC/R and associated equipment. Knowledge in electrical and plumbing, necessary to adequately diagnose/repair HVAC/R related equipment is expected. The applicant should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications. Experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System is preferred. Employees are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the highest level of ethics. They are expected to work together to meet the needs of the department and university, by providing exemplary customer service to the staff, faculty and students.

    Physical Requirements:

    Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.

  • An Associate Degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of HVAC/R or related field is preferred. At least 5-years of HVAC/R experience may be accepted in lieu of a certified degree.
  • Certification in a technical training program within the field of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration is preferred.
