The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an HVAC Operating Engineer for the Institutional Planning and Operations-Facilities.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Under the direction of the Supervisor, Utilities and Operations, the HVAC Operating Engineer will work independently under general supervision, takes a leading part in the operation, maintenance, adjustment/calibration and repair to all HVAC and related equipment to assure operational reliability and proper environmental conditions throughout the campus.
  • Responds and takes appropriate action to resolve emergency situations during assigned evening, night and weekend shifts.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school/vocational school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, which includes HVAC.
  • Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid driver's license.
  • New Jersey Blue Seal (1C) Steam Engineer's License required.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in performing complex and varied repair and maintenance of HVAC, auxiliary equipment, and any related equipment to assure operational reliability.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of work safety rules and principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of motor, pump, and mechanical equipment operation and be able to trace faults.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex task and prioritize work elements.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive
  • Driving Course required.
  • Must undergo pre-employment screenings.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years driving experience preferred.
  • Equipment Utilized

  • The HVAC Operating Engineer will routinely need to intervene with a variety of HVAC equipment (Boilers, Chillers, Air Handlers, Controls etc.) during any given shift.
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements. Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The individual in this position may be exposed to environmental conditions, such as, wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or cold (non-weather), risk of electrical shock and vibration up to 2/3 of time, and risk of radiation less than 1/3 of the time. Moderate noise is typical for the work environment of this job.
