    Summary Question: Faced with a growing demand for grafts (kidney, liver, etc.), in a context of increasing shortage of « healthy » organs, how can we rationalize and optimize organ preservation, in order to ultimately optimize the clinical prognosis of transplantation. Answer: HubLife proposes to design and develop a « physiological », versatile and modular, programmable and connected perfusion machine. This device will make it possible to preserve, functionally evaluate, and recondition if necessary, the organs. It will allow future « Perfusion Laboratories » to set up a « stand-by » and qualification platform before assignment to recipients.     Context The increasing use of suboptimal grafts reduces the prognosis of transplantation (TX) in the short and long term (survival of the graft, of the patient). Approx. 500 removed organs are not transplanted and « lost ». A laboratory centralizing the PER of fragile organs, before allocation and sending to the TX center would allow optimal evaluation and maintenance before (hours – days) allocation , and optimization of multi-organ procurement. Current solutions, expensive or academic and very specific, are further dedicated to a single organ.

    Description Based on the respective biomedical and technical expertise of its two partners (IRMETIST & SIMEDYS), the HubLife project proposes to design and develop a versatile and modular, programmable and connected infusion machine (e.g. a « master » device, central rack , which brings together the common power supply, control and data management functionalities, which controls and to which several modules are connected (typically 3-10; one per component). At this stage, HubLife is targeting the kidney, the liver and possibly the pancreas, but additional collaborations for the heart and the lung are planned and under discussion with several national teams who have already expressed their interest in the project. Of note, within the framework of this project, two doctoral students, formally independent, will work together, one « biomedical », the subject of this Doctorate (IRMETIST partner), the other « biotechno and engineering » (Simedys partner).

    Methodology and implementation

    o In-depth bibliographic analysis (infusion solutions, machines, protocols, functional/technical choices)

    o Definition of specifications and specifications,

    o Design of infusion protocols and scenarios

    o Experimental tests (WP3; part will be carried out with the second PhD student (Biotech)

    Supervision will be provided by P Hannaert, with C Breque (Simedys) and assisted by 2 Research Engineers and with the help of ITA technical staff and the Biochemistry laboratory, during the test phases. In the context of this multidisciplinary project, Pr T Hauet will provide “medical supervision”, as well as contacts with national transplant teams.

    Selection process

    Required profile Good level in physiology and organ physiology (kidney, liver, ..) – At least some knowledge of biochemistry and energy metabolism Very interested (or trained) if not familiar with technological devices (sensors, pumps, etc.) Level in standard microcomputing (programming skills would be a plus) Inclined towards multidisciplinary approaches (biology, physiology, technology, computer science, health technologies, etc.) Able and willing to interact with different interlocutors Proactive, autonomous and self-taught
