The School of Computing and School of Psychology are seeking to hire a Post- Doctoral Research Associate with experience in online textual data crawling and natural language processing to work alongside Dr Chee Siang (Jim) Ang and Professor Karen Douglas on the ERC-funded project ‘Consequences of Conspiracy Theories' (CONSPIRACYFX) awarded to Professor Douglas.

The aim of the project is to systematically examine the consequences of adopting and sharing conspiracy theories, to determine when and how they are important, and why they are influential. The project involves three work packages examining the consequences of conspiracy theories in the domains of politics, health and the environment. A fourth work package examines the consequences of conspiracy theories for the people who adopt and share them. As a Post-Doctoral Research Associate, you will be primarily responsible for research on work package 1, involving textual analysis of political conspiracy theories (e.g., from Twitter, Reddit or similar sites), but will also work with Dr Ang, Professor Douglas, Research Associates and Postgraduate Students across all four work packages involving similar analysis.

As a Post-Doctoral Research Associate you will:

  • Develop, conduct, and coordinate the research as indicated in the grant proposal, such as developing tools for online textual data crawling
  • Write up research for publication and disseminate the project's findings at relevant national and international conferences
  • Assist with external stakeholder engagement and public outreach
  • To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A doctorate or equivalent qualification/experience in Computer Science or relevant areas (or near completion)
  • Experience in programming languages for machine learning and online data crawling
  • Ability to conduct independent research by formulating research questions, designing studies, and carrying out data analysis
