2 - Position Description

The VSC (Flemish Supercomputer Centre) supports the HPC (high performance
computing) activities in all Flemish university associations
(https: // www. vscentrum.be) for more than 10 years. Within the Vrije
Universiteit Brussel, the local VSC hub is part of the Scientific Data and
Compute team (https: // hpc.vub.be).
This team provides centralized services for scientific computing and data
storage to the research community.
We are looking for a new colleague to join our small yet passionate team to
support the RDI users (industry, non-academic). You will report to Ward
Poelmans and have many internal and external (RDI users) contacts.
We are open to junior and senior profiles. The capability to learn and develop
skills in our fast-paced team of passionate people is key. Interested in

A quick look at your work package:
You will assist users in their first steps when using VSC services, such
as…with a customer-oriented mindset.
You will participate in first line support to the RDI users and help
coordinating with second line support when needed.
When relevant you write documentation based on the incoming questions and
problems.
You will help in the development of tailored training material for RDI
users.
You support training sessions and hands-on sessions for current and new
RDI users.
You will guide and advise users in porting and optimizing their workflow
(programs installations, etc.) to VSC systems and services.
Together with your VSC colleagues you will design, and set-up services
tailored to RDI users.
You will report on the usage of users of VSC services.
You advise on the needs of RDI users for future investments.
3 - Profile
You have a thing for IT, and you love to learn new things in a high paced
and complex environment.
You have a master's degree, preferably in IT/Engineering/Exact Sciences
You like to share knowledge and express yourself fluently in English
and/or Dutch.
You possess at least a basic knowledge of Linux, and you are prepared to
learn (a lot) more.
You can explain complex matters with clarity and have effective
communication skills. You adapt the message depending on the audience.
It is a plus if you have any experience with a scripting language like
Python or bash.
You are a team player, customer focused and a nice colleague with a good
sense of humor
Experience with HPC is a big plus. Knowledge/experience with any of the
main domains of industrial RDI as well (e.g. Computational Fluid
Dynamics, Machine Learning, Quantum Chemistry, Bioinformatics, ...)
Experience or knowledge of any of the following domains is a plus:
Experience in software installations (compiling from source); Version
control with git; Experience with visualization tools; Experience in
porting and optimization of applications on Linux systems and GPU
architectures.
4 - Offer

contract at a salary linked to Grade 7 or Grade 8, depending on your
competences and previous relevant work experience.
