Position Title High School Counselor

Position Summary

The High School Counselor is responsible for supporting all St. Anthony Catholic High School students in their social, emotional, academic, college, and career development. Position is involved in planning the campus master schedule and ensuring students receive the courses required to meet graduation requirements for their proposed endorsement. The High School Counselor reports to the principal.

This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under Title IX federal regulations and “Mandatory Reporter” under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Description of Job Duties

  • Plan, organize, implement, and deliver counseling program which improves students' academic achievement, school attendance and attitudes; develops student self-confidence, healthy interpersonal relationships, and life satisfaction;
  • Provide a school guidance curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions for students based on the identified campus needs as found from the campus/student needs assessment;
  • Provide system support through effective school counseling program management and support for other educational programs;
  • Deliver classroom guidance activities or serves as a consultant to teachers in conducting lessons based on the schools/districts guidance curriculum;
  • Support and collaborate career awareness activities for parents, students, and the community, i.e. College and Career Fair;
  • Uphold ethical and professional standards as set forth by the American School Counseling Association and/or other ethical guidelines as set forth by a professional organization specific to held certifications and/or licensures;
  • Regularly monitor students academic progress throughout the year;
  • Collaborate with UIW and campus administration on implementation of college and career programs;
  • Compile, maintain and submit monthly counseling logs/reports, data summaries, and guidance calendars in order to implement and evaluate program efficiency (Archdiocese Catholic School Counseling Services Data Report);
  • Maintain verbal and/or written contact with parent/guardian regarding the student's academic, social and emotional progress and concerns of staff, student, and parent; makes referrals as appropriate in consultation;
  • Communicate the availability of scholarship and assistance opportunities to all students;
  • Develop and present an annual summary of college applications and scholarship application success detailing local, state, foundation, and university awards (Apply Texas website);
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Adherence to daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential;
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance;
  • Knowledge of Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Programs;
  • Ability to adjust and modify program implementation to best serve students, evidenced in positive social, emotional and academic growth;
  • Knowledge and experience with career assessment tools and college board;
  • Knowledge of House Bill 5 Endorsements;
  • Ability to clearly articulate and discuss the counseling program to the community;
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Required Education

    Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work with courses included that address: theories and methods in counseling, psychology of adolescence, career information and development, multicultural counseling and vocational, academic and career testing.

    Required Work Experience

    Experience in counseling and advising students in an academic setting.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in counseling and advising students in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of Naviance.
  • School Counselor Certification.
  • Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

    Valid Texas Teaching Certificate issued by the State Board of Education or ability to obtain as a condition of employment.

    Work Hours

    Monday – Friday, 7:45 am -5:00 pm; occasional weekends and evenings required.

    Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 10lbs for table set-up/tear-down at events.
  • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage potential and current students and respective family members, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
