  • The Area

    Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) is one of two key sites for the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) in Australia. The site sits at the summit of Mt Woorut, NSW, on the border of the stunning Warrumbungle National Park, around 30 kilometres from the town of Coonabarabran. The Observatory is the largest optical observatory in Australia and is an important site for astronomy and space science in Australia. Along with several telescopes owned by the Australian National University, the site is home to the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), Australia's largest optical telescope, and many international facilities.

    The Position

    This key role will provide technical and observing support for Hector, a new instrument at the Anglo-Australian Telescope.

    Based at the Observatory, the main responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical and observing support for the telescopes and instruments at the Observatory, with a strong focus on Hector.
  • Undertaking the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the instruments and telescopes at the Observatory.
  • Maintaining and testing instrument performance, with a strong focus on Hector.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, organisations, clients, or contractors on technical matters related to the instruments and telescopes at the Observatory.
  • Undertake night-time shifts supporting Hector runs, both as a night assistant and as an observer, and help train new night assistants.
  • The Person

    We are looking for a person with recent experience in a scientific or technical environment. Experience with astronomical instrumentation and/or astronomical observing is desirable. We are looking for someone who likes challenging problems and encourages team members and colleagues to find effective solutions.
