Faculty of Arts The Faculty of Arts builds on a long-standing tradition comprising over four centuries. Our ambition is to be a leading faculty in the areas of teaching and high-quality research, with a strong international orientation yet deeply rooted in the Northern Netherlands. The Faculty creates and shares knowledge through excellent teaching and high-quality research. We train our nearly 6,000 registered Dutch and international students to become future-oriented, articulate, and intellectually independent graduates. The Faculty offers a wide curriculum, consisting of 16 Bachelor's degree programmes and more than 40 Master's degree programmes in areas ranging from Archaeology, Cultural Studies, History, and International Relations to Media Studies and Linguistics & Literature.

Office for Student Affairs (Bureau Studentzaken, BSZ) The Institute of Education (Onderwijsinstituut, OWI) is tasked with providing optimal support to the organization of the degree programmes. In addition, the OWI is responsible for the quality assurance and supports teaching innovation. These tasks are extensive and complex considering the wide array of Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes the Faculty offers.

As part of the OWI, the Office for Student Affairs ensures the implementation of an efficient administrative process. The work activities are of a cyclical nature and take place in a dynamic environment, in which support is primarily aimed at students and lecturers. In the past six months, guidelines have been set out by the interim Head of the BSZ, in collaboration with the Director of the OWI to ensure the future-proof continuation of BSZ. The new Head of Department will be tasked with the further development and implementation of these guidelines in conjunction with the Strategic Staffing Plan. The goal is to create a flexible and robust support department, in which professionals work on improvement in joint ownership in a continuously changing environment.

The position The Head of the Office for Student Affairs:

  • provides hierarchical and functional leadership to the following teams Teaching and Exams (consisting of a front and back office), the Timetable Office, the Exchange Office, and the Administrative Secretariat. The data manager and communications coordinator are also part of the BSZ (a total amount of 16 FTE). is responsible for the organizational and staff-related management of the Department. is responsible for the best possible deployment of staff and resources within the Department. coaches and supports staff members in consultation with the coordinators
  • handles the development of the organization by anticipating trends and developments within and outside of the University, such as societal developments like diversity and employability, but also technological developments, such as automation and digitization
  • carries out the vision of the organization and includes the Department in the set objectives, and translates these objectives into results to be achieved in consultation with the coordinators, which will be included in the annual plan
  • plays an active role and suggests improvements based on their own vision
  • is responsible for the Department's policy development and implementation and advises the Faculty Board on the strategic policy
  • safeguards processes in the various administrative systems and makes sure to safeguard the PDCA cycle to ensure the realization of continuous improvement—reliable data registration by Teaching and Exams, providing the necessary information related to the Binding Study Advice (BSA), Educational Services (Onderwijsdienstverlening, ODV), and the Study Progress Registration
  • is responsible for the general organization and adequate maintenance of teaching systems, graduation procedures, and efficient lecture and examination timetables
  • represents the Office for Student Affairs in the overarching Teaching Support team.
  • The position hierarchically falls under the Director of the Institute for Education.

    Qualifications
  • we are looking for a new colleague with a university degree at MA level, preferably in the Arts
  • you are a coaching manager who gives the highly qualified Department staff members responsibility under clearly defined expectations
  • you have demonstrable leadership capacities in a complex organization
  • you are committed to relieving lecturers and students by ensuring that support processes are of optimal quality, through which the quality of teaching continues to grow
  • you are capable of overseeing the Department from a helicopter view
  • you have a vision on the cohesion between the various departments within the Office for Student Affairs
  • you act as an ambassador for the Department within and outside of the Faculty of Arts
  • you connect the various departments of BSZ with the Institute of Education
  • you have good communication skills and an excellent knowledge of Dutch and English, both verbally and in writing
  • you have an eye for process optimization as well as a high degree of organizational sensitivity.
  • Organisation Conditions of employment

    In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU), we offer the following:

  • a maximum salary of € 6,737 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
  • an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and an 8% holiday allowance over the annual gross income
  • a challenging position in a societally involved organization; initially a temporary position for the period of one year, with the prospect of appointment for an indefinite period depending on performance and organizational circumstances.
