  • About ARU

ARU is a global university transforming lives through innovative, inclusive and entrepreneurial education and research. We are ranked in the world's top 350 HEIs in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and in the top ten mainstream universities in the country for the proportion of UK undergraduates in employment 15 months after graduating. We have campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford, London and Peterborough with around 2,500 staff and 35,000 students from 180 countries. With a focussed civic mission, we are committed to working with others through education, research and knowledge exchange to enhance the economic, cultural and social wellbeing of the communities in which we work and live.

    About the Role:

The Faculty of Health, Education, Medicine and Social Care is the largest of the University's four faculties. The faculty has five schools including a School of Medicine; a School of Nursing and Midwifery in Cambridgeshire; a School of Nursing and Midwifery in Chelmsford; a School of Allied Health and a School of Education and Social Care. The faculty is the largest provider of health and social care programmes in the UK. The core aim of the faculty is partnership working, being responsive to national policy and the needs of our local partner provider organisations. We are known regionally and nationally for the quality of our education, research and knowledge exchange activities and our impact on the region's health, social care and education workforce, its community, and its economy. We draw upon the strengths of the broad range of disciplines and structure within the faculty, which mirrors our partner provider networks.

We provide ground-breaking research within our Vision and Eye Research Institute, our Veterans and Families Research Institute, the Medical Technology Research Centre, and in our Education, Social Care and mental health research teams. We have a developing clinical trials unit and an internationally recognised NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, which drives innovation in the health service.

The School of Education and Social Care has an established and expanding portfolio of undergraduate and post graduate taught courses and post graduate research students in education, social work and social care. The school led the successful submission for REF 2021 in unit 20 for social work and social policy and unit 23 for education, demonstrating evidence of world leading research.

To continue the school's achievements, we are now seeking a permanent Head of the School to provide overall strategic and operational leadership with responsibility for all the disciplines in the school. The Head of School will manage the development, implementation and delivery of our innovative education programmes, build and nurture our relationships and partnerships, and deliver a successful research and knowledge exchange portfolio.

In order to lead this exciting initiative, you'll need to have extensive experience in education and or social care in the UK, with senior management and leadership experience, including budget and performance management and the ability to work collaboratively across the Higher Education and health environment.

You will be a well-connected and committed clinical academic leader with a track record of leading teaching, research and knowledge exchange. You will have expert knowledge of relevant external bodies, including SWE and QAA requirements, alongside a demonstrable understanding of relevant UOA, REF, TEF and KEF.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Nigel Harrison, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean, Faculty of Health, Education, Medicine and Social Care nigel.harrison@aru.ac.uk

Interviews to take place Friday, 28th October.
