Job Purpose


GU Heritage is a fast-paced retail business providing bespoke branded clothing, stationery and gifts in our busy University gift shop. Additionally we run the shop which supports the Hunterian Art Gallery where we sell bespoke gifts, exclusive art prints, jewellery and gifts, all of which support the customer gallery experience and exhibitions.

GU Heritage is a wholly owned sub co of the University of Glasgow. The entire retail team are part of the wider Commercial Services Directorate. You will report directly to the Executive Director of Commercial Services, and to the GU Heritage Board of Directors where you will prepare and present quarterly business updates. You will play a key role as part of the cohesive, agile Senior Leadership Team for the Commercial Services directorate.

We have recently expanded into bookselling with the acquisition of our established campus bookshop. This is a new exciting adventure for commercial growth with an existing experienced team of booksellers who run the campus bookshop and the online shop.

We are currently tendering to open a brand-new Food Mini Market with a franchise partner where we will work to fit out and open a food convenience store on our campus. We will recruit a new G U Heritage Food leadership and customer assistant team to run and grow this fantastic retail opportunity.

There are two other main areas of our business. We work with the various departments which are part of our 4 main Colleges which make up the University, helping them with smaller walk-in orders as well as significantly larger orders made up of the ranges we sell. Often, we design and source one off bespoke product ranges for specific department initiatives and University events. We have our own online e-commerce site, which we are continuing to grow with our web developer team who look after our customer order fulfilment with help from the shop team.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Your role is Head of Retail. You will do this with energy and purpose, enhancing the student and staff experience through sector leading service, providing a great retail offer, and ultimately growing our profit contribution which we give back to the University of Glasgow. You will achieve this by leading and developing a team who feel valued every day and who are proud about what we achieve. You will create efficient resource models and an enabling environment which delivers a robust succession plan.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/ Qualifications

Essential: A1 Knowledge of leadership within the retail sector. A2 Knowledge of, and ability to, produce financial budgets and lead on performance of P&L accounts. A3 Knowledge of developing and presenting business strategies.

Desirable: B1 A depth of understanding in how to deliver a Food Safety framework. B2 Knowledge of online and social media platforms.


Essential: C1 Customer centric, always making decisions which guarantee the best customer experience. C2 Someone with a real desire for personal integrity and creating teams who look out for each other. C3 A great listener with an ability to accept or understand other points of view, or an alternative way. C4 Genuinely empathetic to what is important for individuals and teams. C5 A strategic, solutions-based retailer who can lead across multi sites. C6 Flexible with hours and days to ensure the right outcomes are owned and delivered. C7 Numerate and good at utilising e-POS and stock management systems, and applications. C8 You are someone who takes ownership, works with pace and helps everyone understand what is expected of them and the vital role they play in the strategy, and you ensure everyone has fun at work. C9 The kind of person who remains calm when challenges arise and works with a positive can-do attitude and good humour to resolve issues. C10 You are fair, consistent, believe in transparency for everyone and instinctively know when to stand by decisions which are about doing the right thing.

Desirable: D1 An ability to create the right mix of volume sales and margin growth.


Essential: E1 Previous retail leadership experience. E2 An experienced, skilled presenter who can make a compelling case at every audience level. E3 Proven experience in writing business cases and results presentations. E4 Experience leading different team dynamics, and different types of retail platforms.

Desirable: F1 Multi-site leadership experience. F2 Previous experience in heritage retail and/or a fast-paced multi product retail operation. F3 Experience in Food Retail. F4 Experience in product design and development. F5 Experience working with suppliers. F6 Experience in growing a retail business.

Terms and Conditions The salary band for this exciting and diverse role starts at £45,000 and the salary awarded to the successful candidate would be based on level of experience.

This post is full time and open ended (permanent).

G.U. Heritage Retail Ltd (GUHRL) GUHRL is the University of Glasgow's retail subsidiary company. The GUHRL team runs the University Shop, the Hunterian Shop, the University's Online Shop, and supplies University departments with branded merchandise.
