We are seeking to appoint an experienced Head of Commercial Operations to join our Senior Management Team.

This role will be responsible for the income generating activity undertaken by the SU including:

  • Communications and marketing
  • The SU Café – Coffee Union
  • The SU Bar – Freddie's
  • Mobile Food Truck
  • Sports Centre/ gym
  • Sports Programme including competitive sport
  • Large Events – including Freshers, Welcome Fairs, Halloween, Union Awards and Refreshers Programmes
  • Student led event
  • Incoming sponsorship for events and media sales
  • Stalls at Graduation Events
  • The role is responsible for a team of up to 5 direct reports, full-time staff team of 15, along with a wider team of up to 50 student staff and a turnover of circa £900k annually.

    You will have at least 5 years management experience in the hospitality or events sector, including running events. This experience should include the development and analysis of budgets; stock control and ordering systems; staff training and development; business development and risk assessment and monitoring.

    This is a Senior Management role, but you should have a can-do attitude and be able to step in and pick up any part of operational delivery if needed based on your experience.

    You should be a highly motivated person who is driven by meeting targets and delivering exceptional customer service. You will have excellent attention to detail and work in a systematic way to ensure consistent quality across our commercial operations and events.

    This role is not flexible and requires onsite attendance at our Ealing Campus 5 days per week, including the occasional evening and weekend. Some consideration could be given to flexibility during the summer break. The core hours (35 hours pw) would be spread across 8am – 8pm depending on the events being held.

    The key focus areas for the role in the coming 12 months will be:

  • Growing weeknight activity in Freddie's
  • Diversifying the food offer to suit a broad range of students
  • Implementing a digital stock control and ordering system
  • Piloting our mobile Food Truck
  • Growing external sponsorship
  • Developing hybrid events
  • You will be joining a full-time team of 38 people and part time student staff team of 83 who are committed to delivering the best possible experience to our students. We have been ranked the Top Student Union in England for the last 4 years in the National Student Survey and in 2022 UWL was named University of the Year for Student Experience by the Times Higher Awards.
