6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Monday – Friday April-September with occasional evening and weekend hours required as necessary. 6:30 am- 3:00 pm October – March This position is designated as ‘mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Advanced Level Supervisor insures that crew members work safely, comply with safety, department and campus policies while continually performing work in a productive and efficient manner. Oversees, assigns and performs work along with needed equipment and tools with a crew or crews of Grounds Workers and/or General Utility Workers in landscape/turf maintenance.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and one year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school and five years experience in the area of work assigned, three of which were in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Essential Job Duties
1. Provides daily in-field supervision and oversight to all Grounds General Maintenance Crews / Teams for grounds, turf and landscape operations Campus Wide to provide continuity to Campus Grounds / Landscape Management.
2. Ensures continuity in the field and reporting for all of the General Grounds Maintenance Crews providing services to maintain turf, bed & plantings areas, trees shrubs, etc. throughout Campus.
3. Serve as the Lead for all Grounds General Maintenance Crews. Position functions as the second-in-charge and will assume supervisory roles as needed when supervisor is out or unavailable. 4. Evaluate and directs daily assignments and tools & equipment to be used for all Grounds General Maintenance activities.
5. Plant flowers, bulbs, trees and shrubs in accordance to plans. 6. Cultivate, mulch and remove weeds from established plant beds. 7. Prune trees and shrubs to ensure proper health and vigor of plant material. 8. Operation of trucks, tractors and other gardening and grounds maintenance type equipment.
9. Fertilize trees, shrubs, flowers and lawn area following established fertilization program. 10. Seeds newly prepared lawn areas, reseeds established lawn areas as required. 11. Move office furniture, and help with special event setups and tear downs. 12. Install and maintain concrete stepping stones around building where footpaths necessitate such measures. 13. Apply chemical spray applications to plant material under direction of licensed pesticide applicator.
Other Work Responsibilities
1. Provide supervision to lesser skilled employees in duties assigned in absence of the supervisor. 2. Supervise or serve as lead worker to rake and mulch leaves, clear snow from walkways and parking lots. 3. Act as the team lead or serve as working supervisor for the upkeep and repair of sidewalks, parking lots, grounds keeping equipment, pools, fountains, fences, planters and benches. 4. Perform other daily tasks that include litter control, tractor operation, weed eating, edging, blowing, mowing, seeding and fertilizing, installation, watering, irrigation repair, operation of irrigation, pruning, pesticide application, riding mowers, tree removal, operation of backhoe and skid steer, storm clean up and snow removal. 5. Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning and regular saws, hedge and brush trimmers and axes, as well as power lawnmowers, chain saws, snow blowers and electric clippers. May use heavier equipment such as tractors and other vehicles. 6. Operate machines and equipment such as trucks, tractors, and other gardening and grounds maintenance type equipment. 7. Perform more advanced grounds operations including but not limited to aerating, over seeding, mowing and fertilizing with tractors and other specialized equipment. 8. Use irrigation methods and control systems to adjust the amount of water consumption to reduce waste. 9. Obtain, mix and transport chemicals and similar products, and apply correctly as required. 10. Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice trees, etc. during inclement weather. This usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays which may require early morning travel in marginal weather conditions and long working hours. 11. Make minor repairs to lawn mowers, sprayers and other grounds equipment. 12. Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
1. Five years experience in the area of grounds care and maintenance. 2. Three years of supervisory experience. 3. Associates degree in turf maintenance or other equivalent degree. 4.North Carolina pesticide license, or the ability to obtain certification(s) within six months from the date of hire. 5. Knowledge and skill to repair and maintain artificial surfaces. 6. Knowledge of irrigation methods and control systems. 7. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation and comprehension) required. 8. Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications. 9. Computer literate; knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs. 10. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures. 11. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork. 12. Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification.
Valid driver's license required. The Building Environmental Supervisor operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
