H2 Combustion modelling & simulations using LES-FlaRe (2 studentships)

Two fully funded PhD studentships are available to start in Lent 2023 term with an aim to study hydrogen combustion and its stability under micro-mixing conditions relevant for gas turbine applications. This project will help to build combustors for zero-carbon fuels to address global warming and the mitigation strategies. One student will investigate flame structure and emission and the second student will study the blow-off characteristics of H2 flames in a micro-mixing burner. These activities will use large eddy simulation (LES) paradigm along with FlaRe closure for subgrid scale combustion. Hence, strong interests in numerical modelling of reacting flows, computational fluid dynamics and high-performance computing on massively parallel machines and, strong analytical skills, logical deduction and programming skills in c, c++ and Python are essential. Some background in the above areas would be preferable. There are close collaborations with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for practical sides and University College London for experimental aspects.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in an Engineering (Mechanical/Aero/Chemical/Energy & Environment), Physics, or Applied Mathematics, related subjects.

This studentship will be supported for 3.5 years fully (maintenance and fees) through a research grant supported by MHI, Japan. The studentships are open to home and overseas students.
