Description

  • Organisation/Company: CNRS
  • Research Field: Astronomy › Astrophysics Astronomy › Cosmology
  • Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1)
  • Application Deadline: 07/10/2022 23:59 - Europe/Brussels
  • Location: France › MEUDON
  • Type Of Contract: Temporary
  • Job Status: Full-time
  • Hours Per Week: 35
  • Offer Starting Date: 01/11/2022
  • Eu Research Framework Programme: H2020 / ERC
  • -- Testing and developing new high contrast imaging algorithms, including with machine learn-ing. - Running these algorithms on large datasets. - Interpreting the results: study of individual systems, characterisation of young exoplanets (at-mosphere and physical properties) - Interpreting the results: statistical studies, comparison with planet formation models. - High contrast imaging observations with the ESO VLT, JWST if needed, etc - Astrophysical monitoring of the project within the team. - Supervising students.

One of the objectives of the COBREX ERC project is the direct detection and characte-rization of extrasolar planets in direct imaging. To do so, we will use new algorithms to analyse high contrast imaging data from a large set of archival and from future observations, in order to significantly push the current detection limits. In particular, our aim is to image exoplanets for the first time in the 5-10 au region, i.e. at the Jupi-ter to Saturn distances in the Solar System. To meet these objectives, you will lead an ambitious reduction and analysis programme, using hundreds of young stars, to search for and characterize new exoplanets, and you will analyse the results in the context of planet formation and evolution (comparison to models).

The Post-doc will work at LESIA (Observatoire de Paris-Meudon). LESIA gathers in par-ticular experts in High Contrast Imaging, Interferometry, solar system planets and pla-netary science, disks, exoplanet atmospheres, solar physics, offering thus a rich scienti-fic environment.

The work will also be done in close collaboration with colleagues from IPAG (Grenoble), Centre de Recherche en Astrophysique de Lyon, and Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur.

The COBREX team currently gathers more than 10 permanent astronomers, a technical team, 4 PhD students and 1 post-doc. 2 additional post-docs are expected to join the team in 2022.

Regular visits to Grenoble, where the COBREX Data Center is located, will be necessary.

Working language is English or French. French is therefore not mandatory.

The Post-Doc will participate in observations to complete the available archival data, in particular with the ESO telescopes and with the JWST if needed.

    Eligibility criteria

    - PhD in astrophysics, planetary sciences or equivalent. - Knowledge in statistical analysis (formalism, biases, algorithms) - Knowledge in data reduction algorithm development and computation. Knowledge in AI (if possible). - Languages: python (mandatory), idl (if possible), mathlab (if possible). - Good background in Data Science required. - Values: enthusiasm, tenacity, creativity, team spirit.
