Position Summary:

Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 240 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 250 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft. Currently, Student Housing houses 45% of UCI's enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI's 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan. Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

The Department of Student Housing builds, maintains and operates facilities that promote and support a learning-centered and resident-focused organization. Under supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, performs a variety of grounds maintenance and repair functions throughout student housing. Functions include: mowing, edging, litter pick up, cultivating, trimming of shrubs and small trees, fertilizing, planting and irrigation repairs. Operates grounds power tools and machinery.

Required:

Minimum 3 years of groundskeeping experience.

California's driver's license.

Ability to follow, model and promote conduct that adheres to the University of California Principles of Community. Possession of a valid California's driver's license. Ability to effectively communicate in English orally, electronically and in writing. Ability to fill out daily work reports completely and accurately. Ability to identify undesirable plant material. Knowledge and skill to operate commonly used grounds equipment and tools. Skill in operating trenchers, riding mowers, tractors, roto-tillers, and other commonly used pieces of power driven equipment. Knowledge and ability to maintain irrigation systems. Demonstrate knowledge of commonly used Southern California plant material, their cultural requirements, pests and diseases. Skill to safely use both hand and power tools and equipment. Ability to effectively work independently or in a team. Ability to follow through and carry out assigned tasks. Apply problem solving skills and use sound judgement.

Preferred:

Ability to effectively communicate in Spanish orally, in writing or electronically. Ability to troubleshoot and make minor irrigation repairs.

Special Conditions Required:

Available for overtime and weekend work. Work schedules are subject to change to meet department's needs. Department can require overtime work to meet operational needs. Department can operate and assign shifts seven days a week. Must be able to communicate in English – both verbally and in writing – for purpose of instruction and record keeping. Must be able to pass background check.
