Salary Information Department Summary

The Office Sponsored Programs Accounting (SPA) works closely with the Office of Sponsored Programs staff under the Division of Research and Innovation to ensure financial compliance and proper accounting of externally sponsored funds, including financial reporting, award closeouts, cash management of sponsored and non-sponsored projects, audits and desk reviews, accounting period close, reconciling and validating financial information.

Position Overview

This position collaborates with the AVP for Research and the Director of Accounting and Fiscal Compliance to build a Division-Wide audit capability related to identifying weaknesses in regulatory compliance related to sponsored Research. This position leverages knowledge of auditing practices and experience to assist the Sponsored Programs Accounting and Fiscal Compliance team in implementing and maintaining internal audit methodology and practices; in executing the quality assurance program; and in preparing communications that serve various stakeholders, including but not limited to faculty and staff involved in sponsored research.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year College or university in Accounting and five (5) years of experience conducting monitoring reviews, assisting with audit requests, interpretation of audit findings, and/or performing audit follow-up. Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to demonstrates professional oral and written communication skills, including concise and well-written audit reports.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and implement regulatory standards and legal requirements.
  • Ability to work with and communicate effectively with all levels of management and personnel. Possess a solid understanding of internal audit and internal control principles, financial and operational processes, governance, and risk management.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and provide meaningful assessments for reporting and management decision-making.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Job Duties

    o

    Execute financial, operational, and compliance audits related to Sponsored projects.

    o

    Perform audit fieldwork activities, including interviewing, creating end-to- end process flows, performing risk and control analysis, conducting appropriate testing, and obtaining supporting documentation.

    o

    Review financial and operational processes for adequate controls, efficiencies, and compliance with policies, regulations, and accounting principles to identify issues and make recommendations for report development.

    o

    Monitors sub-recipient compliance with regulations and the requirements of their sub-recipient agreements through site visits, audits, and other mechanisms applicable to sub-recipient monitoring.

    o

    Provides recommendations to UNTHSC staff and sub-recipient managers related to policies, procedures, systems, and records to ensure adherence to grant agreements, federal regulations, and organizational needs and objectives. Conducts internal compliance reviews of grant programs.

    o

    Collaborate with the AVP for Research and Director of Accounting and Fiscal Compliance to build a Division-Wide audit capabilities related to identifying weaknesses in regulatory compliance related to sponsored programs.

    o

    Create and provide training and presentations regarding compliance expectations and risk potential to faculty/staff across the campus regarding grants and contracts.

    o

    Be responsible for monitoring, evaluating and assessing risk and potential compliance breaches across all levels of sub-recipients.
