Vacancy Overview

The Department of Psychology is currently recruiting for a number of Graduate Assistant Posts to assist in the teaching of modules at Undergraduate first year level. Psychology has a growing and diverse student population and was ranked 1st amongst Russell Group Universities in the National Student Survey (NSS): for staff being good at explaining things; providing timely feedback; and running well organised courses, by our final year Psychology students.

The Department currently holds a Bronze TEF Award and are working towards the Silver benchmark. We are looking for new postgraduates who are want experience to enhance their teaching skills in preparation for more senior teaching posts in the future. Your contract would offer you a minimum of 20 hours/term for a period of 2 years or until you graduate.

This advert relates to teaching for Term 1 2021 for PS215: Further Methods in Psychology: (Core), a module which focusses on enhancing research skills.

This is a teaching post in Term 1 supporting seminar / practical sessions. Seminars are likely to be on-line. It is preferred that this is one post covering two seminars on Wednesday and three on Thursday. Please indicate in your covering letter if you have knowledge and experience related to PS215: further methods in Psychology. Note that you may be offered work on an alternative module depending on applications and department need, and that posts in the 22/23 academic year may vary

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

The demonstrator's role is to aid the module convenor to deliver a high quality teaching experience to a large cohort of second year undergraduate students. The demonstrator will need to become familiar with module content and support students in the work, providing in session feedback and guidance. There will be opportunities to develop teaching skills needed for more senior teaching posts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities will be outlined by the module convenor, but as an indication will include all or some of the following: Preparation to become familiar with module content, and meeting with the module to convener to discuss materials. Facilitating discussion groups with students. Responding to student queries and enquiries. Course administration- undertake duties including but not limited to maintaining attendance records. Research and Scholarship Ability to reflect on practice and development of own teaching and learning skills

Person Specification

The Person Specification focuses on the knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required to undertake the role effectively. This is measured by (a) Application Form, (b) Test/Exercise, (c) Interview, (d) Presentation.

Essential Criteria 1

A relevant undergraduate (2:1 or 1st) or Master's (merit or distinction) qualification in Psychology or a related subject or overseas equivalent (a)

Essential Criteria 2

Currently registered for postgraduate study in Psychology, or in a related subject at the University of Warwick (a)

Essential Criteria 3

Ability to support the learning of small groups of students on modules in Psychology (c)

Essential Criteria 4

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written); good command of written and spoken English (a)

Essential Criteria 5

Permission from your supervisor before accepting a GTA position (a)

Essential Criteria 6

Understanding of any work limitations imposed by your visa or funder (a)

Experience in, or be able to demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student populations. (a)
