Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Genomics Institute at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an assistant research scientist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Karen Miga, the assistant research scientist will apply expertise and education in genome sequencing, genomic biodiversity data and bioinformatics, with experience in indigenous research. The researcher will be expected to publish in scientific journals. They will lead strategic educational outreach initiatives and science and technology trainings, working with indigenous researchers, biodata consortia, and governments and organizations focused on increased access and engagement in genomic education and research.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD (or an equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a closely related field.
  • Training in bioethics (experience could be obtained while in graduate school).
  • A minimum of five years' experience in genomics and computational biology (experience could be obtained while in graduate school).
  • A minimum of three years' experience in bioethics and Indigenous data sovereignty (experience could be obtained while in graduate school).
  • Experience developing training and outreach programs focused on science and technology (experience could be obtained while in graduate school).
  • Experience in diplomatic relations or governmental affairs in regard to science and technology (experience could be obtained while in graduate school).
  • A demonstrated record of publishing in scientific journals including those focused on primary research as well as science education and science diplomacy.
