Genetic analysis of ascorbate and glutathione functions in grapevine

This PhD project will contribute to an ARC Discovery Project at the University of Western Australia, which partners with CSIRO (Adelaide) and the University of Birmingham (UK). The project aims to make a step-change in understanding how the development of grapevine is regulated by genetically manipulating antioxidant functions. Ascorbate and glutathione, the major soluble antioxidants, play key roles in plant development by controlling hormone, energy pathways and other pathways. However this knowledge is restricted to annual plants and does not translate to perennial life cycles. This project will develop and study transgenic lines of grapevine with reduced levels of ascorbate and glutathione.

International applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for a UWA International Fee Scholarship. Domestic applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for a Domestic Research Training Program Scholarship. Please note that these scholarships are available to commencing PhD students only. Current PhD students are not eligible to apply. Specific criteria:
  • Excellent communication and personal management skills are expected.
  • The ability to travel independently to Adelaide for extended research visits is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in plant tissue, genetic modification or breeding is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology and biochemistry is desired.
  • Applicants will be expected to apply for and accept an Australian- government PhD scholarship if awarded. In this circumstance, the applicant would be offered a $5,000 pa PhD top-up in lieu of the ad hoc scholarship.
  • Supervisor reserves the right to appoint before the closing date should a suitable applicant be identified
