Madingley Hall and Gardens is a magnificent venue, owned by the University of Cambridge. It is a Grade I listed building, first constructed in 1543, situated in the village of Madingley which is around four miles to the west of the City of Cambridge, close to the intersections of the M11, A14 and A428.

Madingley Hall has a 24-hour reception service, 13 meeting rooms, 62 ensuite bedrooms, a professional kitchen, licensed bar, coffee shop, Lodge House available as rentable short-stay accommodation and is set in 8-acres of grounds including superb Capability Brown designed gardens. The site incorporates a large car park.

Madingley Hall directly employees over 30FTE colleagues and a pool of flexibly employed zero-hours staff. In a typical trading cycle, turnover exceeds £2 million.

We are seeking to appoint a General Manager to lead Hall and Gardens Operations, taking overall responsibility for the running of the Hall and on- site health and safety. The General Manager leads the Hall Operations team which is responsible for the day-to-day safe and surplus generating functioning of the Hall as a high-quality educational and commercial events venue.

The successful candidate will work entrepreneurially to identify new market opportunities and generate considered business cases, ensure the Hall site is operated within budgeted parameters and generates an operating surplus.

Educated to degree level or with corresponding professional experience in the hospitality sector, the successful applicant will have proven experience and ability in:

-strategic and operational management in fields such as hoteling, catering and events -effective people leadership, including team development, training and change management

-efficient team, resources and budget management

-commercial income generation in a target driven context

-experience developing, implementing and continuous improvement of policies, particularly in relation to site health and safety, food hygiene and licenced premises regulations.

Reporting to the Director of Continuing Education, the General Manager will advise on the safe, effective and efficient operation of the Hall. The General Manager will work closely with other Institute staff including the Head of Human Resources, Director of Finance and IT and Director of External Engagement. On a University-wide basis, they will engage with the Estates Division, the Safety Office and Security team. The General Manager will also interact with peers in the collegiate University, such as college Domestic Bursars, ensuring that best practice around hospitality, quality, site maintenance and environmental sustainability are maintained.
