The University of Adelaide - a member of Australia's prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive universities - stands tall among the world's leading institutions of learning and innovation. Ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide and a major employer in South Australia, it has an international reputation for research and teaching excellence. The University now seeks an accomplished senior legal professional for the role of General Counsel at this pivotal time.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Vice- Chancellor and the Executive Leadership Group, the appointee will lead a high- performing team of legal practitioners in providing strategic legal and compliance advice that underpins sound decision-making. It's an exciting time at the University of Adelaide, and whilst the position will be focused on the provision of GC capability, this role will contribute to creating the new Adelaide University by 2026.

Applications are encouraged from appropriately qualified and proven legal executives with experience in a comparable role, ideally within a large and complex entity in a highly regulated and publicly accountable domain. University experience is not a prerequisite. Commercial and political acumen, strong communication, collaboration and negotiation capabilities and organisational awareness will be essential for success in the role. Your considered, calm, versatile, pragmatic partnering approach, coupled with your communicative and adaptable people leadership style will be well regarded qualities. You are a leader that embraces the shared values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery.

The position will be offered as a 3-year contract from early 2024, and we encourage interest from candidates open to relocating to Adelaide who are passionate about joining this iconic organisation in a historical period of change.

We are partnering with Hender Consulting in recruiting this position. Please visit to apply and for a job and person specification.
