Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The Graduate School is currently testing a remote/hybrid work model as part of a larger University pilot program. This position is eligible for remote/hybrid work through December 31, 2021, with the possibility of extension.

The primary purpose of the Functional Data Analyst position is to support the University's efforts to understand and better assess graduate education. Responsibilities include research involving data collection, analysis of data from multiple sources both internal and external to the University, appropriate presentation of findings in written, oral and online formats, and analyses of best practices.

The position will work with The Graduate School and the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (OIRA) to support reporting requirements and information needs. The selected candidate will also interact with technical and research staff from other campus units in achieving the objectives for specific projects as well as in planning for systemic improvements to enhance data accessibility and reporting efficiency.

This position will be responsible for supporting a variety of data collection, management, analysis, and reporting duties that support academic planning and decision-making at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In particular, this position will focus its effort on providing data and information related to graduate education issues.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure. The Functional Data Analyst will understand and appreciate the nature and purpose of higher education, particularly graduate education.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

- Prefer candidates with higher education experience, particularly graduation education and two to three years of experience working in a data analysis or project management role; preference given toward work with graduate education data, institutional research and assessment, and/or higher education settings.

- Basic technical skills, including data analysis experience, ability to synthesize large amounts of data in varying formats that include Excel and HTML, and data visualization and dashboard experience. Experience with the Tableau software suite and survey administration (e.g., Qualtrics) is required.

- Creativity and ability to foster expansion of current and planned research initiatives.

- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a productive member of a team consisting of technical, administrative, and research support staff.

- Overtime and evening/weekend work are occasionally required to meet deadlines.

- The nature of the work requires close attention to detail, ability to multi-task to complete assignments with competing deadlines, and project planning and management skills.
