  • One vacant position for a full-time scientific project employee at the Chair of Simulation and Modelling of Metallurgy Processes in the Department of Metallurgy probably from January 2022 in an employment contract limited to 3 years. Salary Group B1 based on the Austrian collective agreement for universities, minimum excl. supplements € 2.971,50 per month for 40 hours per week (14 times a year), actual classification is according to previous relevant experience.

    Topic of Research

    During solidification of some alloys equiaxed grains form, grow and move. Small grains are carried with the melt flow, while with further growth grains often sink down and sediment. When the system is a rotating frame of reference, inertial forces appear to act on both liquid and solidified phases. The ideal candidate will explore the effects of inertial forces (centrifugal/Coriolis/Euler) on the dynamics of flow-solidification interaction.

    The different solidification morphologies such as columnar, globular, equiaxed and their transitions will be considered. Vibration and relative movement between liquid and solidified phases will be considered. The investigations will focus on the solidification-buoyancy-rotating flows interactions. Indeed, the interplay of rotation, thermosolutal convection and inertia forces in the rotating frame may result in various solidification and macrosegregation structures.

    Education/Experience

    · Requires a Bachelor/Masters/Phd degree in a relevant subject, e.g. engineering, physics, mathematics, computing.

    · Must have 2 or more years' experience with CFD.

    · Experience with programming in OpenFOAM and/or C++ is essential.

    · Needs to demonstrate an interest in scientific programming, e.g. through software projects and published work (with a minimum of 1 Int. Journal publications).

    · Experience in using, assessing and developing computational methods is desirable.

    · Applicants must be fluent in written English and have the ability to publish research papers at international level academic journals.
