Job Summary/Basic Function

Course name: Differentiating Instruction in the Classroom

Course description: This course, taken in conjunction with Student Teaching in content areas, is for all secondary (K-12 and 7-12) content BSE programs. This course will provide teacher candidates with the ability to develop and apply their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in accommodating instruction for English-language learners and students with disabilities. Candidates will design, implement, and assess intervention plans and differentiated instruction techniques according to established federal mandates and state standards. Candidates will demonstrate sensitivity and competence in adapting lesson plans, addressing literacy in content area courses, modifying assessments, helping students acquire academic language, contributing to multidisciplinary teams and co-teaching.

Contingency: These courses may be cancelled, or additional sections of the courses may be offered pending student enrollment.

In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Special Education or related field.
  • Experience working in educational settings with special populations.
  • Experience working with teacher evaluation for continuous improvement.
  • Experience creating and implementing Individual Educational Plans and Differentiated Instruction for Special Populations.
  • Experience working with partnerships between university-based teacher preparation programs and public schools.
