The research group in Biochemical Process Engineering wants to recruit a First Research Engineer to participate in research projects involving CO2 absorption, desorption and compression for CO2 capture.

The research group in Biochemical Process Engineering is responsible for a versatile laboratory with key competencies for bio-based products and processes that include pre-treatment of biomass, fractionation, CO2 capture, fermentation, conversion processes, green chemistry, upstream and downstream processes. The research topic is part of the Department of Civil and Natural Resources with approximately 350 employees: https: // www. ltu.se/org/sbn

Biochemical process engineering (https: // www. ltu.se/research/subjects/Biochemical-Process-Engineering) develops integrated processes that combine biotechnology and chemistry to produce food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy carriers. In particular, the subject focuses on using bio-based raw materials (forest residues) and industrial point source emissions and developing processes for biorefineries. The research topic consists of 10 senior researchers and several doctoral students.

Duties At Biochemical Process Engineering you will work on the development and operation of an integrated chemo-enzymatic process for CO2 capture of industrial flue gases, from a variety of industries, such as the cement, the paper pulp industry and a variety of bio-based industries.

As research engineer, your work will include operation and maintenance of an automated pilot absorption and desorption plant with capacity up to 80 L of lean solvent for batch operation. Moreover, you will be responsible for setting up and performing collection and compression of the desorbed CO2 gas, using a state of the art compressor system (discharge pressure up to 10 bar). You will also participate in our activities involving valorization of the produced CO2 gas. Your work will include planning, organizing experimental work and maintaining good documentation of the experiments.

Qualifications To be eligible for employment, you must have a master or civil engineering degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering or relevant field. Previous documented laboratory experience, including work with high pressure and high temperature processes is an important merit. It is important that you have a good basic knowledge of chemistry and a strong advantage if you have previous experience of working with chemical or chemo- enzymatic CO2 capture processes. Previous knowledge on the use of relevant analytical equipment (such as HPLC, XRD, GC-MS) is a positive merit.

We are looking for a very motivated person with a strong interest for research, a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. You must be able to function both independently and as part of a research group. Good observation and communication skills are important. In addition, you should master English, both spoken and written.

Information Fixed-term fulltime employment for 1 year. Appointment as soon as possible, but no later than 1 September 2021. Place of employment is Luleå.
