    In the scope of the project UIDB/00195/2020 - Projeto estratégico da unidade de investigação FibEnTech

    A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for BSc - BI, within the Research Project titled “UIDB/00195/2020 - Projeto estratégico da unidade de investigação FibEnTech”, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), IP/MCTES, through national funds (PIDDAC), taking place at the research unit Fibers Materials and Environmental Technologies (FibEnTech) of the University of Beira Interior (https: // www. ubi.pt/entidade/FibEnTech), under the following conditions:

    1. Research field: Civil Engineering

    2. Objectives – Physical and mechanical characterization of water treatment sludge for using as liner materials in earthworks for storing wastewater and solid wastes.

    3. Requirements for admission and hiring:

    Hold a BSc degree in Civil Engineering and meet the conditions to be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the MSc degree.

    If the academic degree required for this application has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the provisions of Decreto-Lei 66/2018, of August 16th and Portaria No. 33/2019, of January 25th, must be complied with.

    The proof of registration in the MSc degree is required for the fellowship contractualization.

    4. Work plan: Drinking water production ate water treatment plants generated aluminum--based and iron-based sludges called water treatment sludges (WTS), which have some kaolinite-like properties. It seems WTS have potential to be alternative materials for earthworks liners that store solid wastes or wastewaters (e.g. sanitary landfills or stabilization ponds), for replacing the conventional used materials (clays or geomembranes). However, it is necessary to know physical and mechanical characteristics such permeability, compaction capacity, density, size particle distribution and particle surface area of the WTS and in mixtures with soils, to compare the values with the typical characteristics of kaolinite and geomembranes.

    The characterization work will de developed in three months according to the following tasks:

    T1 (1 month): Determination and analysis of density, size particle distribution and particle surface area of WTS and in mixtures with soil samples;

    T2 (2 months): Determination and analysis of permeability, Atterberg limits and compaction capacity of WTS and in mixtures with soil samples.

    5. Applicable legislation and regulations:

    Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Lei No. 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current wording (amended by Decreto-Lei No. 123/2019, of 28 August); Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (Regulamento No. 950/2019) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 241, 16 December 2019; Regulamento for Research Fellowships of the University of Beira Interior - RBIUBI (Regulamento No. 100/2020) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, n.º 27 February 2020.

    6. Work location: The work will be developed at the research unit Fibers Materials and Environmental Technologies (FibEnTech), Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Calçada Fonte do Lameiro 6, 6200-358 Covilhã under the scientific supervision of Doctor António João Carvalho de Albuquerque.

    7. Fellowship duration and conditions – The fellowship is opened for 3 months, starting on 1st October 2021. The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI. The grant cannot exceed the end of the project.

    8. Benefits – A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 835,98€ according to the updated values that can be consulted at https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

    9. Eligibility criteria – The evaluation and selection process have three steps:

    1. Verification of eligibility of applications based on defined admission requirements.

    2. Curriculum vitae analysis (CAC) of eligible candidates, based on the following criteria:

    a) Graduate degree (CGL) classification: up to 20 points (p1 weighting: 20%).

    b) Proven experience in laboratory activities (EL) for the characterization of residues and soils, such us particle size analysis, permeability and compaction tests and determination of Atterberg limits, p2 weighting: 50%.

    Without experience: 0 points;

    With some experience: up to 10 points;

    With good experience: up to 20 points.

    c) Scientific publications (PC) on the topic of the grant (p3 weighting: 30%).

    Papers in journals indexed to Scopus or WoS databases: 5 points per piece;

    Works presented at conferences: 2 points per piece;

    Other publications: 1 point per piece;

    The classification of the curriculum vitae analysis (CAC) will be based on the weighted average of the corresponding grades in points a) to c), as follows:

    CAC = p1 CGL + p2 EL + p3 PC

    3. Interview (ENT) to the three candidates with the best classification in the CAC, which can be done by videoconference, in which a classification between 0 and 20 points will be attributed to each one of the candidates.

    The final classification (CF) will be obtained through the weighted average of the CAC classification (p4 weighting: 70%) and the ENT classification (p5 weighting: 30%), as follows:

    CF = p4 CAC + p5 ENT

    In case of a tie in the CF value, the candidate who obtains the best classification in the interview (ENT) will be chosen for the first place in the final ranking.

    13. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a sorted list, by the final classification obtained, and posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

    14. Complaint and Appeal Procedures: After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.

    The proposal for the final ranking of the candidates will constitute a reserve list for selection for a period of three months.
