  • Call open for applications for a research grant (Master), with the reference UIDB/04650/2020, financed by Foundation for Science and Tecnology by nacional funds, under the following conditions:

    Scientific Area: Physics or Engineering Physics

    Admission requirements:

  • To have a Bachelor and a Masters degree in Physics or Engineering Physics
  • To be enrolled in a course, either providing or not providing an academic degree, at a higher education institution.
  • Preference condition: Experience in Monte Carlo simulations in Lattice Gauge Theory. Working knowledge of C/C++ or equivalent programming language. Familiarity with HPC and OpenMP or equivalent parallelization paradigm. Working knowledge of Monte Carlo techniques. Familiarity with phase transitions.
  • Hiring Requirements: If the qualification has been granted by a foreign higher education institution, it will have to be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, pursuant to article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, which approves the regime legal recognition of academic degrees and diplomas in Higher Education, arising from foreign higher education institutions, and paragraph e) of paragraph 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law No. 60/2018, of August 3, all of which the formalities must be fulfilled there until the contracting act.

    Activity Outline: Carry out Monte Carlo simulations in a discretized version of Yang-Mills (in 5 dimensions) in search of fixed points of the continuous model renormalization group. Study and extend the Yang-Mills discretizations in order to obtain different continuous models. Develop advanced Monte Carlo techniques, specialized for the models used. It is intended that the candidate perform simulations analyzing the joint microcanonical entropy associated with the systems: - fundamental action and adjoint action; -fundamental action with one and two loops; - the extensions developed during the period of this fellowship.

    Legislation and regulations: Law Nº 40/2004, updated by Law Nº. 123/2019, of 28th August; Regulation Nº. 950/2019 of 16th December (Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia); Law Nº. 66/2018, of 16th August (Legal Regime for Recognition of Academic Degrees and Higher Education Diplomas awarded by Foreign Higher Education Institutions); Regulation Nº 184/2021, of 3rd march (Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto).

    Work place: The work will be developed in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Research unit CF-UM-UP, under the scientific supervision of Doctor João Manuel Viana Parente Lopes.

    Grant duration: Initial duration of 6 months, with beginning on September of 2021.

    Maintenance allowance amount: The grant stipend amounts to 1104,64€ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ). The payment will be made by bank transfer.

    Voluntary Social Insurance: As long as the scholarship is for a duration of 6 months or more, and in compliance with the provisions of article 10 of Law 40/2004, the grantee shall be entitled to the assumption by FCUP of the charges resulting from contributions levied on the first of the echelons referred to in article 36 of Decree-Law no. 40/89, of 1 February, with the addition of charges arising from the option for a higher tax base being incurred on its own.

    Personal Accident Insurance: In addition to these allowances, the grantee will be covered by personal accident insurance.

    Selection procedure:

    The selection methods to be used are as follows:

    Curriculum assessment, which will take into account the parameters listed below.

    1. Academic curriculum, taking into account the classifications in master degree and bachelor and the training profile appropriate to the project tasks (AC);

    2. Master's Thesis and its relationship with the project task area (MT);

    3. Scientific production: Quality of scientific production relevant to the recruitment area and sub-area (books, articles in journals, articles in conference proceedings, chapters in collective books), measured by the type and quality of the means of publication and references made by other authors. Special importance will be given to published or pre-published work on the project themes, referred to in the Work plan (SP);

    4. Experience in computational projects for scientific calculation (ECP);

    5. Other activities, carried out within the scope of the Higher Education system, revealing the spirit of innovation, autonomy, ability to mobilize and work as a team, commitment to the institution (OA).

    The final classification will be obtained using the formula:

    FC=0.40AC+0.30MT+0.10SP+0.15ECP+0.05OA

    Advertisement of final decision: The final results of the evaluation will be published through a list ordered by final classification, sent to candidates by email. It is further informed that, pursuant to the provisions of articles 121 et seq. of the Code of Administrative Procedure, it has a legal period of 10 working days from the day immediately following the notification, to make a decision, if it so wishes.

    A complaint may be filed against this decision within 15 working days or, alternatively, an appeal may be filed within 30 working days, addressed to the Director of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, pursuant to article 191 et seq. of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

    Deadline for applications and form of presentation of the applications:

    The deadline for submitting applications will be 10 days from the date of publication of the Research Grant Announcement.
