Position Category Faculty - Tenure Track (FT) Summary

UVU has the largest student enrollment among public universities in the state, with 40,000+ students. It is one of a growing number of institutions in the nation offering an integrated dual-mission model that combines the rigor and richness of a first-rate teaching university with the openness and vocational programs of a community college. Under the direction of the dean and the chair of the Department of Elementary Education, teach undergraduate elementary teacher education courses in differentiation and other courses as deemed appropriate, potentially including graduate courses. Engage with partner school district teachers and administrators in clinical teacher preparation as well as in supervision of students in field placements. Provide service to the university and community, support collegiality, and uphold professional and ethical standards. Engage in scholarly activities and/or creative endeavors which contribute to the academic mission of the university, School of Education, and profession. Support the implementation of a teacher performance assessment and the accreditation process.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a doctorate degree in a field directly related to the area of instruction (or ABD with dissertation defense scheduled – degree must be in hand by position start date). At least three years of successful K-12 teaching experience. Earned professional teaching license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current research-based content, skills, and dispositions required to teach academic differentiation, including knowledge of assessment, curriculum design, and asset-based models of instruction.
  • Knowledge relevant to teaching other elementary education courses.
  • Knowledge of current trends and innovations in preservice teacher education, including clinical programming and teacher performance assessment.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory practices related to preservice teacher education.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to uphold professional and ethical teaching standards.
  • Skill in managing a productive environment for teaching and learning.
  • Skill in providing timely and effective feedback to preservice teachers.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Skill in elementary subject matter integration.
  • Ability to teach effectively in an inclusive and engaged student-centered environment.
  • Ability to engage in critical professional issues and innovations, including teacher performance assessments.
  • Ability to communicate and interact positively with colleagues, students, and K-12 personnel.
  • Ability to serve on School of Education, university, and other professional committees. Ability to uphold a collegial teaching and working environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    At least two years of successful college/university-level teaching experience in a teacher education program. Evidence of scholarly pursuits and potential.

    Physical Requirements

    Frequently standing, walking, and sitting. Frequent use of fine-hand manipulation associated with the use of a computer. Consistently talking, hearing, and speaking. Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
