Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

A faculty specialist position is available in the field of macronutrient metabolism and mitochondrial function. The goal of our laboratory is to understand how alterations in nutrient metabolism contribute to changes in mitochondrial function in various tissues during active periods of growth and development and during onset of metabolic diseases including type II diabetes and fatty liver. Towards this goal, this position requires highly motivated individuals with overall skills and knowledge in a) performing a range of biochemical and molecular assays b) maintaining a variety of analytical instrumentation under the supervision of the investigator c) assisting in animal experimentation and data analysis and d) management of routine laboratory care and maintenance. The laboratory will have state of the art instrumentation and analytical procedures for researching metabolism in animal models and using various in vitro approaches. This position title will not support J1 visa employment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Animal Sciences, Biochemistry or any related Life Sciences field is required. This position requires laboratory animal (mice, embryonic and neonatal chicken) handling and performing metabolic studies. At least one year of experience is required in performing routine biochemical and/or molecular assays, including western blot analysis for protein quantification, RNA extraction, PCR reaction for gene expression analysis. The applicant should be highly motivated and should demonstrate a strong willingness to learn new techniques and approaches.

Preferences:

Previous experience in laboratory animal (mice, rats, chicken etc.) handling or metabolism experiments is highly desired. Any experience in gas or liquid chromatography and/or mass spectrometry would be desired.

Lifting of medium weight goods (20-50 lbs eg: Centrifuge Rotors), handling tissue culture cells or zebrafish tanks, use of hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, and compressed gases. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is regularly required to type at a computer or typewriter. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds up to 25 feet. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may have to work in a room environment up to 83 F for extended periods.
