Job Summary :

The Faculty of Science invites applications for a contract Forensic Science Instructor in the FEPAC accredited Forensic Science program. Reporting to the Program Laboratory Coordinator, the Instructor provides instruction to undergraduate students in Crime Scene Science (FSCI 2010), Criminalistics I (FSCI 3010), Criminalistics II (FSCI 3030) and Mock Crime Scene Practicum (FSCI 4460).

Responsibilities/Accountabilities: The primary responsibility of the applicant is to teach crime scene science and criminalistics laboratories at the university level. In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, they will deliver innovative applied forensic content that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies.

  • The position extends from September 2021 until April 2022.
  • Responsible for the successful delivery of all laboratory sessions for Crime Scene Science (Fall 2021; 4 sessions), Criminalistics I (Fall 2021; 3 sessions), and Criminalistics II (Winter 2022; 3 sessions) and Mock Crime Scene Practicum (Winter 2022; 1 session).
  • You will work closely with the Forensic Science Programs' Laboratory Coordinator to provide support for these courses; including supervising and delivering laboratory sessions; marking assignments, reports, tests, and examinations; answering student questions; maintaining regular office hours as necessary, invigilating examinations and meeting regularly with your supervisors.
  • Required Skills

  • Experience with criminal case investigations, such as homicides, hit and runs, shootings and sexual assaults
  • Excellent understanding of crime scene documentation and examination techniques, including but not limited too;
  • Protection and integrity of crime scenes and the collection and preservation of evidence
  • Documentation through note-taking, measurements, photography and sketches,
  • Identifying and processing fingerprints, footwear and toolmarks, as well as firearms and ammunition
  • Application and use of forensic light sources
  • Experience with bloodstain pattern analysis will be considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of crime scene photography (day/night), including technical knowledge of digital camera equipment
  • Basic understanding of stereomicroscopy, compound and comparison microscopy
  • Experience providing expert witness testimony for criminal and/or provincial proceedings
  • Familiar with Hemospat and AFIX Tracker software as well as FARO 3D imaging instrumentation
  • Working knowledge of MS suite of programs, in particular Microsoft OneNote
  • Education:

  • Applicants should possess at least a BSc or equivalent degree, and/or relevant experience in a laboratory or crime scene investigation environment.
