Internal Recruitment No Working Title Extension Poultry Health and Flock Management Specialist Anticipated Hiring Range $90,000 Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm Job Location Raleigh, NC Department Poultry Science About the Department

The main purpose of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science is to support the North Carolina poultry industry and community through extension, research, and teaching activities. Poultry is the largest income-producing commodity in the state and the Prestage Department of Poultry Science works together with different producers, commodity organizations, allied industries, and other state agencies in educating students and the public, and in distributing information gleaned from research and extension activities at the university level. The Department educates and conducts research and extension projects related to physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, immunology, nutrition, toxicology, animal well-being, and management with the ultimate goal of improving the production and wholesomeness of poultry as a food product.

Essential Job Duties

The extension component of this position will support county Ag agents and Area Specialized Poultry Agents with extension backyard flock programs and the commercial poultry industry. This faculty will play a significant role in providing health, disease, and biosecurity training to backyard flock owners to mitigate the potential contamination of neighboring flocks. The successful candidate will also serve as a liaison with the NC poultry industry, USDA, and NCDA&CS, as needed, particularly on federal and state poultry disease issues, status, and food safety issues. Additionally, it is expected that this position will collaborate with departmental and other university faculty, county and area agents and others when appropriate, to optimize the development, implementation, and effectiveness of the extension and applied research programs developed.

The faculty member will be expected to teach at least two courses related to poultry and animal health. While these courses currently exist, it is expected the successful candidate will engage in course development activities in order to modernize course infrastructure and content. Courses impacted will be part of both the NC State Agricultural Institute Associates of Applied Science (AAS) Livestock and Poultry Management (LPM) program as well the Bachelor of Science in Poultry Science. At least one course will have a laboratory section that will also be developed and taught by the successful candidate.

This position supports the NCSU-CALS Food Animal Initiative. North Carolina is a recognized leader in food animal production. Agriculture contributes $84 billion to the state's economy and generates 663,200 jobs. More than 68% stems directly from food animal systems. Even more, if you factor in offshore marine fisheries and plant-based agribusiness that supplies feedstock. We can help North Carolina become the world leader in food-animal sciences by coordinating new research with existing proven infrastructure. CALS has partnered with the College of Veterinary Medicine to lead this transformative initiative, and as it grows, we will enlist the support of our partners at NC State, other land grant universities, government, and industry.

Depending on qualifications and experience, the faculty member will be expected to conduct and/or collaborate on applied and/or basic research into factors impacting animal health, performance, and wellbeing.

NC State promotes an integrated approach to problem solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world. NC State's land grant mission of teaching, research and service is dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. Applicants are encouraged to review the institution's and CALS' missions, visions and strategic plans, and consider how their background, interest and experience would enable them to support the university.
