General Statement

This position is located in Ronan County Profile: Located in northwestern Montana, Lake County encompasses much of the Mission Valley and has a population of about 30,934. Polson, on the south shore of Flathead Lake is the county seat with a population of 4,918. The MSU Extension office is located in Ronan, population 2,174, at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Nearly two-thirds of the county lies within the Flathead Reservation that was established by the Hellgate Treaty of 1855 and is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation. Agriculture is the strongest economic contributor for the county, and tourism is important as well. Flathead Lake is on the north end of the county and is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River in the United States. U.S. Highway 93 runs the length of the County and is one of the primary access routes to Glacier National Park.

This position will provide leadership for Family and Consumer Science and 4-H Youth Development Extension programs for MSU Extension and Lake County. The successful candidate will work to enhance Family and Consumer Science programming to address locally identified need and generate positive community impacts. Additionally, this position will work with a group of dedicated and energized 4-H members, parents, and adult volunteers. Both programs will bring professional satisfaction to a person who thrives on helping individuals and groups become more successful.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, foster and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, implement, facilitate, and evaluate educational programs in Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development.
  • Build and maintain cooperative working relationships within the community and with the appropriate county boards, agencies, and organizations.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and recognize youth and adult volunteer leaders.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with area Extension agents and extension specialists to conduct effective, integrated educational programming.
  • Work with the Lake County Fair Board and fellow Lake County MSUE faculty to support the Lake County Fair.
  • Utilize all available media sources and advancing technologies to communicate with MSU Extension personnel and to disseminate information to clientele.
  • Position requires considerable in- and out-of-county travel.
  • Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, Youth Development or related field
  • Success in providing innovative and effective leadership to educational programming relating to youth development and/or family and consumer sciences.
  • Experience accepting and delegating responsibilities.
  • Experience managing multiple and varied tasks.
  • Experience working effectively with individuals and groups.
  • Experience working as a self-starter and working with little or no supervision.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience recruiting, training, and providing leadership for volunteers.
  • Substantial relevant work experience with Youth Development and Family and Consumer sciences
  • Demonstrated experiencing guiding volunteer led organizations to grow through collaborative processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with consensus building, group facilitation, and conflict resolution.
  • The Successful Candidate Will

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

    This position, if filled at the Master's degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Master's degree will be required to complete their Master's degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.

    Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver's license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver's license.

    Physical Demands

    Position requires frequent night and weekend work, extensive reading, frequent travel throughout the county, and occasional travel throughout the state of Montana. Position also requires using a variety of teaching methods and operating a variety of demonstration and educational equipment.
