General Statement

COUNTY PROFILE: This position is located in Lewistown, Montana , which is the county seat for Fergus County. Located in Central Montana, Fergus County covers approximately 4,600 square miles. The county is bordered on the north by the Missouri River and on the south by the Big Snowy Mountains. The county is approximately 2.8 million acres with beef cow-calf, dryland small grain and dryland hay being the primary agricultural production enterprises. Lewistown is the county seat with a population of approximately 5,900. Other small towns in the county include Denton, Grass Range, Moore, Roy, and Winifred. County population, according to July 1, 2019 estimates is 11,050. Fergus County is a mix of three mountain ranges, an inter-mountain basin, open prairie, and the Missouri River breaks. A multitude of fishing, hunting, and recreational opportunities exist within the county and in the nearby area. Excellent schools and the Central Montana Medical Center are important aspects of this central Montana community.

The county ranks third in Montana in total market value of agricultural products sold and generates about $64 million in cash receipts in both livestock and crops annually. Approximately 109,000 acres of winter wheat, 35,800 acres of spring wheat, 43,400 acres of barley, and 200,000 acres of hay are harvested annually and there are about 66,000 head of beef cows and heifers. Agricultural production, agri-business, and small manufacturing form the basis of the economy along with the education, medical care, and government office sectors. The county 4-H program includes 228 youth members and 72 adult leaders in 14 organized clubs.

The primary focus for the agent in this full-time position will be to provide leadership and educational programming in production agriculture and natural resource management, along with 4-H/youth development and community and economic development, specifically in the areas of agriculture and natural resources. The agent in this position works with the full time 4-H/Youth Development and Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Extension Agent and the full time 4-H Program Assistant and shares responsibilities for the 4-H program with both positions. Both agents and the 4-H Program Assistant work with the full- time administrative assistant for the Fergus County Extension Office. The Fergus County Extension Office also provides limited Extension education programs to the residents of Petroleum County, which is adjacent to the east boundary of Fergus County.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and evaluate educational programs in agriculture and natural resources, with emphasis on livestock production, dryland crop production, weed management, horticulture, farm and ranch management, range management, and environmental management.
  • Work collaboratively with the 4-H/FCS agent and the 4-H Program Assistant to provide support for program development and execution of educational experiences for Fergus County 4-H/youth development program youth and volunteers in the areas of agriculture, animal, and plant project areas.
  • Coordinate with current community leadership and local organizations to provide educational programming in rural and economic development related activities.
  • Provide the public with informational resources and guidance for various agriculture, horticulture, pest management, and/or other community concerns.
  • Work in cooperation with MSU Extension Agents; community boards, organizations, and individuals; and the 4-H Council and its subcommittees, as needed.
  • Involve local citizens and community organizations in identifying needs and priorities, targeting new audiences, and developing and implementing appropriate and responsive educational programming in agriculture and natural resources.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with the Fergus County Commission.
  • Provide leadership in Extension within Fergus County in a manner that increases MSU's success in positively impacting Montanans, benefiting youth and adults, and increasing the capacities of communities.
  • Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.
  • Comply with all Extension federal, state, university, and county reporting requirements.
  • Engage constituencies via direct interactions, collaborations, and partnerships with professional associations, committees, stakeholders, local governments, and partner agencies.
  • Develop professional partnerships with specialists, associate specialists, peer field faculty, and stakeholders to plan and implement integrated, interdisciplinary programs that advance the mission of Extension and increase Extension's success in efficiently identifying and meeting the needs of Montanans.
  • Assess clientele and stakeholder needs for the purpose of developing locally directed programming and resources and delivering effective educational experiences to diverse audiences.
  • Deliver educational resources through Extension teaching, developing curriculum(a), educational materials, one-on-one consultations, and small group instruction.
  • Maintain timely accountability through documenting and reporting outcomes, impacts, and successes in Extension scholarship to Extension, internal and external stakeholders, and funding partners.
  • Serve on appropriate committees at local, state, regional, and national levels, and fulfill other activities that support Extension, local communities, and MSU departments and colleges.
  • Participate in relevant state, regional, national, or international professional activities.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Government Pesticide Applicator's license.
  • Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or relevant work experience in agriculture, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead groups; assess community needs; and develop, organize, plan, teach, and evaluate effective Extension programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership for and work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups, individuals, and community organizations representing a variety of youth and adult audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of a variety of information technologies for dissemination of educational information, educational programming, and program management.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master's degree in agriculture, natural resources, or a closely related field.
  • Relevant work experience and/or training in agriculture and natural resources, with emphasis on livestock production, dryland crop production, weed management, horticulture, farm and ranch management, range management, and environmental management.
  • Extension teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups and help them find constructive solutions to controversial or contentious issues.
  • Ability to promote the advancement of diversity.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

    This position, if filled at the Master's degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Master's degree will be required to complete their Master's degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.

    Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver's license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver's license.

    Physical Demands

    Position requires frequent night and weekend work, extensive reading, frequent travel throughout the county, and occasional travel throughout the state of Montana. Position also requires using a variety of teaching methods and operating a variety of demonstration and educational equipment.
