Chaves County is located in southeast section of New Mexico. The county mostly lies in the Great Plains bordered to the western by the Guadalupe and Sacramento Mountains and a portion of the Lincoln National Forest; and, to the east lies Mescalero Ridge. The latest census records a county population of 64,912. Communities of Chaves County include Roswell, central northern, down to Dexter and Hagerman to the south and east. The county is a highly productive farming area since irrigation from Artesia wells make the land arable and oil companies have productive field in this eastern area. Chaves County is also one, if not the largest milk producing counties in the nation. There is a vast amount of cattle ranching across the county.

NMSU is New Mexico's land-grant and space-grant institution, a comprehensive research institution dedicated to teaching, research, public service and outreach. In addition, the NMSU system includes a satellite learning center in Albuquerque, Cooperative Extension Service offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, and 12 agriculture research and science centers. New Mexico State University is the institution of choice for more than 15,000 students from 49 states and 89 foreign countries.

THIS IS A NON TENURE TRACK POSITION Position is located in Chaves County; headquarters in Roswell, NM

Successful candidate will: - Provide leadership and guidance to Extension educational programs for adults volunteers and youth including 4-H and youth, special interest groups, adult and youth leaders and the public throughout the county as the job requires. - Collaborate with youth serving community organizations and agencies to help further Extension 4-H/Youth Development programs. - Support annual County Fair efforts. - Recruit, train and support volunteer adult and youth leaders. - Team with other Extension Agents in the county and district and with State Specialists, District Department Head and Administrators in planning and implementing total Extension programs. - Maintain a favorable public image and gain acceptance for self, Extension and New Mexico State University among the county citizens. - Administratively responsible to the County Program Director and through him/her to the Eastern District Department Head. - Provide timely reports as required.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree (in hand by hire date) required. At least one degree must be in Agriculture or related field. Or may be under-filled as an Extension Associate I. Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or related field with a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher required. Must complete a master's degree within 5 years of hire date to remain employed. Promotion to assistant professor rank will be based on performance and Dean's approval.

- Ability to relate effectively to people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, income and education levels in order to develop informal educational programs that meet their needs. - Must have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing as well as teach. - Ability to implement educational experiences for both youth and adults in furtherance of the mission of Extension required. - Ability to provide the leadership role in management of volunteer organizations including recruitment, training and support of volunteers. - Successful candidate must have basic computer skills. - Successful candidate must be able to drive and serve as youth chaperon at state 4-H events. - Ability to work odd hours and weekends as necessary. - Ability to travel within county, state, and nationally to Extension and all 4-H related functions as necessary including occasional transporting and chaperoning of youth.

Must live in county where employed and willing to work odd hours as needed. Personal auto required; reimbursed at IRS rates per mile. Valid driver's license required.
