Goshen College invites applications for a full-time appointment as Executive Director of the Music Center , starting as soon as possible.

The director will be responsible for providing leadership and planning for the Music Center performance venue of Goshen College. Planning and implementing successful programming for the Music Center will be a primary focus, including scheduling the very successful annual Performing Arts Series. Working in support of the Community School of the Arts, Music Department, and Theater Department, the director will assist with planning for their rehearsals and performances.

The director will also manage administrative and business operations of the Music Center and its core programs; oversee funding programs and internal administration, including tracking key performance indicators and fiscal management; direct resource planning; coordinate a communications and marketing strategy; and facilitate possible grant applications and awards involving the Music Center. In addition, assists with performances of the theater department in the Umble Center. The successful candidate will foster collaborations outside Goshen College, for example with local public schools; alumni members; and community foundations.

Essential Functions

Programs

  • Music Center
  • Primarily responsible for the planning, goal-setting, and overall effectiveness of the Music Center's non-academic programming
  • Create, monitor and improve policies for use of the Music Center that are in line with industry best practices.
  • Performing Arts Series (PAS)
  • Chair the PAS Committee – Schedule and lead PAS meetings.
  • Ensure success and planning of the PAS in collaboration with the PAS Committee.
  • Create and oversee budget and financial analysis for planning and evaluation.
  • Manage the procurement of artists including negotiating performance fees, evaluating riders, and completing contracts.
  • Additional Performances
  • Ensure success and planning for performances that may be added, such as community school of the arts or faculty recitals.
  • Manage contracts and budgets for these events as needed.
  • Support faculty committees that participate in these events.
  • Umble Center
  • Secondary responsibility for productions in this performance venue.
  • Provide oversight to technical staff as needed.

  • Identify appropriate mechanisms to promote the Music Center and its programs (website, advertising, sponsorships, direct mail, etc.)
  • Engage with Goshen community leaders to promote the Music Center and programs. Identify appropriate community-focused events to be held in the Music Center.
  • Seek grant and sponsored program support for the initiatives of the performing arts at Goshen College in collaboration with the VP for academic affairs and the grants office.
  • Identify, solicit, and steward corporate and major donor sponsorship for the Music Center and the Performing Arts Series in collaboration with the VP for advancement.
  • Key Collaborations

  • Music Department Chair and faculty to ensure a strong working relationship that serves the needs of the academic department while achieving the goals of the Music Center.
  • Events staff for planning and implementing programs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a successful fundraising plan for the Music Center in collaboration with the vice president for institutional advancement.
  • Center for Community Engagement for CSA programming and summer camps.
  • Assist the Theater Department faculty to ensure a strong working relationship that serves the needs of the department and goals of the Umble Center.
  • Collaboration with Senior Leadership:

  • Prepare reports for and meet regularly with VPAA.
  • Serve as a member of the Institutional Advancement team preparing relevant materials for Music Center fundraising.
  • Collaborate with VP for Finance on routine maintenance and capital projects for the performance venues.
  • Consult with the VP for Communications and People Strategy for promotion.
  • Ancillary Responsibilities:

  • Serve on college-wide committees and/or groups.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory Responsibility, has direct supervision for:

  • Office Coordinator (.50 FTE) shared with the Music Department (0.25 FTE)
  • In addition, very close coordination with faculty in the Music Department and Community School of the Arts.

    Education and Experience
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree is required, a master's degree or higher is preferred.
  • Five or more years related experience in performing arts administration, including experience in organizing and implementing significant concerts or music festivals.
  • Previous experience with community and professional musical organizations desired.
  • Skills and Competencies

    REQUIRED:

  • Prior experience with musical and/or theatrical performance
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with colleagues, patrons and performers
  • Prior experience with budget management
  • Interest in collaboration and service
  • Commitment to working with students, employees and partners in support of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Goshen College
  • PREFERRED:

  • 5 years of non-profit management
  • Record of successful performance venue management
  • Previous experience with fundraising or grants
  • Prior experience working with youth or college students
  • Bilingual
  • ability to work effectively with office colleagues, faculty, administrators, staff and students in a variety of roles and settings.
  • Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of computer monitor and operation of normal office equipment.
  • Occasional need to lift and carry equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • Evening and weekend work required
  • Work Environment/Environmental Condition: Both inside environmental conditions of office work and outside environmental conditions moving from building to building on campus or hosting groups off campus.
