At the University of Southampton, our aim is to change the world for the better, bringing together realms of academic research, creativity and knowledge to have a truly collaborative, immersive and ground-breaking impact. We care about the challenges that humanity is facing, and work to support others on a local and global scale.

In the Office of Development & Alumni Relations (ODAR), our job is to galvanise our community to solve these challenges and to make a difference. To learn more about working in the ODAR team, have a look at our Join ODAR website.

Sitting within ODAR, the Engagement & Advancement Events team is responsible for an annual programme of events – delivered online and in person - designed to develop and strengthen relationships with university alumni and supporters. In addition, we are responsible for delivering several high-profile wider University events – from the annual Vice-Chancellor Awards ceremony to the Staff Party.

The role

Reporting to the Head of Events, the successful postholder will manage their own varied portfolio of events including activity that will develop and grow key relationships with our civic and corporate audiences, events to enhance our staff and student communities as well as events linked to our university fundraising opportunities providing a platform to cultivate and thank our amazing donors and supporters.

The ideal candidate will have;

  • Broad range of event experience organising large complex events, both in person and online with a good understanding of event technology.
  • Excellent communications skills, be highly motivated, able to organise and prioritise work, be confident working alongside senior stakeholders, and be able to use your own initiative to complete tasks and projects to strict deadlines.
  • Proven understanding of how strategic events can enhance fundraising and engagement activities - able to develop creative event ideas and proposals that are both audience-centric and objective-led.
  • Ideally line management experience.
  • This role is based at our lively Highfield campus, although most of the team work on a hybrid basis so your time can be split between working remotely from home and catching up with colleagues on campus.

    About Us

    We are planning our biggest ever £100m Campaign, and our event activity will be at the forefront of this exciting and transformational project. Together, we want to raise more money and to engage more alumni and friends with Southampton so that we can change the world. And with the full support and investment of our University leadership, we are growing our team over the next few years. We are so excited.

    We need people with intellectual curiosity and people who have different ideas. We need people with direct experience or transferable skills and the interest and drive to take on a new challenge. We are actively determined to welcome a diverse group of colleagues into our inclusive team. Every day will be different, you will meet incredible people and the rewards will be huge.

    Imagine creating events that fundraise for medical technologies that could cure cancer or dementia. Or connecting alumni around the world and reawakening important friendships and partnerships. This could be a career-defining and remarkable opportunity.
