Position Summary

The Science Library's Evening Fulfillment Specialist is responsible to the Science Reserves Specialist for hiring, training, supervising 5+ student assistants who work in the Circulation/Reserves unit, and for performing public service duties and a variety of clerical routines.

The Evening Fulfillment Specialist assists library patrons in accessing the collection by managing a public service desk, including handling specialized services for library users, by processing materials, and by maintaining accurate records. The employee provides key assistance to Security at night and on the weekends in case of an emergency situation in the Libraries. Work is performed independently and subject to periodic review.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Previous and accurate work experience using a computer.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons.
  • Ability to perform clerical tasks accurately with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience processing cash receipts, checks and credit cards.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for supervising or directing the work of others.
  • Physical Demands

  • Sitting or standing for long periods at a computer.
  • Position also entails lifting boxes weighing approximately 30 pounds each and pushing loaded book carts.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Duties/Responsibilities

  • Oversees the public service desk during evening and weekend hours which includes departmental opening and closing procedures; providing supervision to all students working the desk; and handling all non-routine problems.
  • Provides a safe environment for libraries materials and users by monitoring security gate activities during the time that Security is not present, knowing and performing duties as outlined in the library emergency procedures and knowing and performing duties involved in closing the library.
  • Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

  • Aids library users in accessing library resources by circulating books and other library materials, providing general information to the public, processing material requests for patrons, managing student workers at the desk, resolving account issues, and handling issues with patrons that concern policies, procedures and routines relating to the Public Service Desks by providing correct and courteous interpretations and solutions.
  • Participates in resource sharing at the Science Library by cross training with the Reference Department to provide limited reference assistance from a joint service desk

  • Develops and maintains a competent, productive, and satisfied staff of 5+ student assistants by managing their hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, counseling, coaching, and termination.
  • Maintains student payroll records by updating, verifying, and approving student time in OneSource.

  • Assists in the operation of the Libraries' resource fulfillment initiatives, by searching for material, preparing material for transport, and scanning and delivering electronic materials to patrons; instructing UGA patrons in the use of the Libraries' retrieval and delivery services, Document Delivery, GIL Express and Interlibrary Loan.
  • Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists the unit supervisor in developing and promoting policies and forms for use in the unit in general, aiding in the collection of statistics and participating in meetings of the Access Services Department.
  • Maintains flexibility in the Department and organization by assuming other similar responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE (the Libraries' listserv) and other communication tools, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
