Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Abacus Consulting and Evaluation Services (Abacus) is a Research Service Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Abacus specializes in evaluation, network analytics, and data science & analytics and is committed to amplifying impact and effectiveness of client and partner projects. Abacus' leadership consists of experienced evaluators who maintain currency with state-of-the-art research and evaluation methodologies. Abacus uses a variety of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method approaches to address the research and evaluation questions identified in our projects. This position will manage, develop, and grow the capacity for evaluation research within Abacus.

Position Summary

The Evaluation Research Associate will support the development and implementation of evaluation research methods in projects within Abacus. The Evaluation Research Associate will lead, co-lead or assist evaluation teams with instrument development, data collection, and data management of research and evaluation programs. This position will work closely with the Director of Abacus Dr. Gaurav Dave and Associate Director of Research and Development Dr. Mary Wolfe, to build client relationships before and during project startup. They will serve as a liaison with partner organizations and clients within and outside the US. In addition to independent technical and research tasks, the Evaluation Research Associate will have a supervisory role in research activities that require an advanced level of knowledge in the fields of evaluation, research methods (both qualitative and quantitative), and development of scholarly and client-focused products. Tasks within the scope of this role are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, requiring consistent use of independent discretion and judgment. The Evaluation Research Associate will play a key role in the development of proposals for funding agencies; conception and startup of new projects; methodological support for existing projects; and supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research activities. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

-Design, plan, conduct, and coordinate evaluation research in support of various projects; evaluate, select, and apply standard research methods; keep detailed records of data; use software to perform statistical analyses; apply qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approached to evaluation of research projects; and summarize results for inclusion in scientific and clientele-oriented publications.

-Maintain currency on innovative methods in evaluation and mixed methods research; advise evaluation and data teams on various research methods.

-Prepare and write proposals to funding agencies; maintain financial accounts related to research projects; supervise undergraduate or graduate students and other RSC staff involved in research; and coordinate the review of work completed by research staff.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Three years' experience related to research/evaluation or program management. Substantial and demonstrated ability to work independently and within complex research environments. Clear and effective communication of technical detail of evaluation methods to audiences with varied expertise. Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, supervision, and leadership skills. Documented skills and experience in project management and pre-award processes. Demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively, to help plan the work of others, and to work collaboratively with a variety of individuals.

Evaluation and Research Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of evaluation research methods, mixed/multi methods approaches, social/clinical research principles, study design and survey instrument development, methods of data collection and analysis. Knowledge of statistics to organize, analyze, and report data/information to Abacus teams, faculty, and outside organizations such as the NIH. Ability to provide consultation on evaluation and research design to stakeholders. Ability to translate the program vision, plans, and aims into evaluation plans. Ability to compose and present accurate and clearly written reports, scholarly products, and research findings in an understandable and accessible format to a range of audiences. Documented skills in project management. Highly organized.

Data Management: Ability to identify, evaluate, and modify data collection methods and instruments. Strong quantitative and qualitative data collection and data management skills. Established data analysis skillset in cleaning, exploring, analyzing data, and interpreting results. Ability to clearly articulate data quality assurances or limitations of data. Proficient in statistical software (e.g., STATA, R) and survey and qualitative analysis tools (e.g., REDCap, ATLAS.ti). Strategic Planning:

Ability to identify and pursue new opportunities for expanding research and development team capacity and productivity. Ability to contribute to leadership team initiatives, operations and process improvements, and new business development thoughtfully and creatively. Demonstrated collaborative problem solving and ability to identify current or potential obstacles. Interest in and experience with starting new initiatives. Communication:

Excellent communication skills, verbal and written. Proven ability to manage others and successfully lead a team with varied degrees of experience and technical expertise. Ability to lead exchange of research information through technical assistance and instruction. Serves as the primary (initial) consultant for new client projects from startup to team hand-off. Independently provides consultation to clients and others related to the structure, strategy, and goals of the program. Demonstrated comfort with working with lay and clinical community, state health departments, government agencies and academic institutions/investigators.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Supervision experience of teams with varying levels of education, skills, and expertise. Communication and design skills integrated with data presentation and conveying key messages. Technical expertise in evaluation methods, frameworks, and designs. Master of Public Health or equivalent degree preferred. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
