  • Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are innovative materials that contract upon activation with light, studied in the framework of the EU project REPAIR, aimed at developing novel cardiac contractile assist devices. However, the possible pro-arrhythmic effects caused by the prolonged myocardial contact of LCE patches have never been evaluated. The aim of this project is to study whether LCE patches, either quiescent or light-activated, alter myocardial electrical function. The fellow will develop a technique to obtain cardiac slices from human surgical samples or animal models (mouse, rat, rabbit, pig) and to maintain them in culture; slices will be coupled with LCE patches for different periods, while studying electrical function with fluorescent techniques or traditional pipette-based electrophysiology. The fellow will also isolate cardiomyocytes from human samples and animal hearts, to be used for patch-clamp and ion fluorescence studies, after layering then onto LCE surfaces
