RCSI in conjunction with the Irish Cancer Society, National Cancer Registry in Ireland (NCRI) and the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) will be conducting a project examining the impact of COVID19 on cancer. The overall goal of the project is to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer services (including outcomes) in Ireland. The impact of COVID-19 is defined as the implications of COVID-19 on cancer diagnosis, cancer management and treatment and cancer outcomes (clinical cancer characteristics and mortality). To address this overall aim, this project has four specific aims which include:

  • identifying appropriate COVID-19 and cancer related data and data sources in Ireland and internationally;
  • outlining international best practices for generating real-time data to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer services and outcomes;
  • determining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer referral and diagnosis, treatment and outcomes and
  • modelling and predicting the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer outcomes.
  • Information on the short, medium and long-term impacts of COVID-19 on cancer care will help identify requirements and resources needed for future unmet needs of cancer patients. Additionally, this information will provide policymakers with evidence to ensure sufficient future services are adapted to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on cancer management.
