The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist will support the Director of Environmental Health and Safety in maintaining Bowdoin College's comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Program. The Safety Specialist will work under the direction of the Director of EHS and be responsible for coordinating and conducting safety training, managing regulated wastes, directing hazardous material clean-up efforts, reviewing and revising safety plans, programs, and policies, assisting with job hazard analyses and exposure assessments, administering the HAZCOM program and acting as a “competent person” for some protrams. The position conducts routine inspections and audits of fire and life safety systems, emergency equipment, building safety, regulated waste collection areas, and generates associated reports. This position also requires data collection, managing compliance records, and sending out communications to both internal and external groups.

  • The salary range for this position is expected to be: Minimum: $50,000 – Maximum: $60,000, depending in experience.
  • Education/Skills Requirements

    Required:

  • HS diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Certification program or training in one or more of the following required: Occupational Health and Safety Administration General or Construction Industry 30 Hour, Industrial Hygiene, NFPA Life Safety or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, MEDEP, USEPA, ANSIstandards/codes/regulations.
  • Experience with safety standards as they relate to Asbestos, confined space, chemical safety, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), electrical safety, lock-out tag-out, arc flash, fall protection systems, lifts and ladders, scaffolding, among others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and speak in front of diverse groups.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized.
  • Possesses strong work ethic and the ability to work independently and make sound decisions with regards to environmental health and safety.
  • Self motivated, and values safety culture.
  • Able to address safety concerns with employees and supervisors as they arise.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) and the willingness and ability to learn new software/computer programs.
  • Preferred:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Health strongly preferred.
  • Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

  • Valid driver's license required with the ability to meet the requirements of the Bowdoin College Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
  • A minimum of three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Standard Work Days and Hours

  • Generally works first shift (8:00AM-5:00PM) but may be required to work at other times when work during before/after hours may occur or as incidents or emergencies demand.
