The Office of Environmental Health and Safety invites applications for an Environmental Health & Safety Officer to join their team. The Environmental Health & Safety Officer provides the main assistance to the Environmental Health & Safety Department in industrial hygiene monitoring and environmental health issues at the University of Montana. The Environmental Health & Safety Officer will develop, coordinate, evaluate, and execute University Policies and procedures that will ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors. This employee will generally be working under the supervision of the Environmental Health & Safety Director, but will need to make independent decisions to a limited extent in a number of disciplines. Under the direction of management, incumbent is responsible for developing, coordinating, training and providing professional consultation and technical expertise associated with environmental, health and occupational safety (EHOS) matters. The incumbent works with internal and external stakeholders to provide a safe environment and to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations.

The Officer will need to have sufficient knowledge to work safely and accurately in the fields of industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational safety, and assist the professional level staff for these program areas.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program
  • Salary for this position is $57,000-$64,000 per year commensurate with qualifications
  • Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Science, chemistry, physical or biological, or an Engineering related field; Experience performing the duties of the position may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
  • Three years of relevant professional experience in the field of Industrial Hygiene
  • Applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations, with specific knowledge on IH standards
  • AIHA industry best practices
  • Safety and Environmental hazard identification methods.
  • Asbestos, lead and mold abatement and remediation
  • Laser Safety
  • Carry out industrial hygiene field measurements to verify levels of specified air contaminants
  • Conduct surveys and observe work conditions to identify processes which pose a risk to health of employees
  • Analyze and interpret results of an assessment to develop plans for improved work conditions
  • Counsel employees on proper ways to adjust work stations to meet ergonomic best practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Physical ability to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment and work in potential adverse environmental conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry 60 lbs. and work in potentially confined spaces
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass a respirator physical and be fitted with an air- purifying respirator
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in industrial hygiene monitoring in an institution of higher education
