Position Summary Information

General Description/Position Purpose

The School of Engineering at Shippensburg University is currently seeking applications for an Engineering Technician to begin as soon as possible. The expected salary range will be commensurate with experience and includes an extensive benefits package and tuition waiver for the employee and dependents.

Expected Duties:

  • Participate in all phases of the various mechanical and civil engineering laboratories setup; equipment procurement, installation and training.
  • Maintain and operate laboratory equipment.
  • Understand and develop safety protocols and create a safe working environment.
  • Schedule and conduct regular laboratory sessions with groups of students for the fulfillment of their class assignments.
  • Assist and supervise students with their special projects and competitions.
  • Interface with the faculty and the department administration.
  • Mechanical and Civil Engineering Laboratories: The candidate is expected to have a general understanding and/or the ability to learn equipment typically used in a Mechanical and Civil Engineering laboratory. Such as,

  • Materials and Manufacturing Laboratory: Furnaces, injection molding, CNC lathe machines and mills, sheet metal forming, welding, cutting/forming equipment.
  • Materials Testing Laboratory: Material testing (static, fatigue, creep, hardness, corrosion). Microscopes, non destructive testing, specimen preparation.
  • Engines Laboratory: Petrol and diesel engines, pumps and turbines.
  • Machines: Vibration, governors, bearings, cams, shafts, gears, chains, belts. Balancing and gyroscopes, accelerations and centrifugal forces.
  • Thermodynamics Laboratory: Pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, emissivity, vessels.
  • Fluids Laboratory: Piping systems, flow and friction measurements, drag/lift/shock testing, turbines and pumps. General Hydrology equipment
  • Structural Materials Laboratory: Concrete preparation and Testing (mixing, permeability, slump, shakers and vibrators, air entrapment and dilatometry, etc.). Steel Truss, beams, column preparation and testing
  • SOIL (geotechnical) laboratory: Testing for Percolation, Filtration, Air and water void content, unconfined and confined soil testing, soil compaction, expansion and swelling testing
  • Water Resources Laboratory: Testing using spectrophotometer, calorimeter, turbidity meter, parallel analyzer, titration system, reactors, reagents, and controllers. Water purification, filtration and drainage equipment.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Qualified candidates will have at least an Associate's degree in mechanical engineering or related field and demonstrated hands-on technical/mechanical work experience in machining and welding, the ability to draw/read sketches using engineering graphics software, and interpersonal skills necessary to support students and faculty to carry out projects and maintain labs and equipment. The candidate must have an understanding of implementing safety measures required by Pennsylvania Labor & Industry. The candidate will have a flexible schedule, but may have to work some evenings and weekends to meet the students' needs.
