Project/Unit Description

The Antenna Systems Division works on projects involving all portions of modern antennas from analog RF at the radiator to digital beams. The division engages in the design, production, and testing of prototype radar and communications antennas for various sponsors, mostly in the DOD community. The division currently has both large and small projects ranging from prototyping a deployable active, electronically scanned radar to developing RFICs. Our research faculty have expertise in:

  • Phased array antenna technology
  • Radar system antennas
  • Antenna and RF PCB modeling and simulation
  • Antenna measurement in far-field and near-field ranges
  • RF design and simulation software: HFSS, FEKO, CST, ADS, Cadence, XPATCH, Modelica, NEC, Altium, Simulink, Matlab
  • Working with all TRL levels of antenna systems
  • Job Purpose

    Designs, develops, analyzes, and tests Radio Frequency (RF) hardware, including antenna, transmitter, and receiver hardware. Designs and develops RF hardware as part of a system architecture over a range of frequencies from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. Analyzes RF hardware performance with modeling and simulation tools, including electromagnetic computational codes. Characterizes and tests RF hardware performance in a stand-alone laboratory environment and in an installed system environment. Prototypes RF hardware and systems to determine design feasibility. Integrates COTS and custom designed RF hardware into large scale systems. Plans and conducts RF hardware component tests and system level testing in a lab and on installed systems to verify specification compliance and system performance.

    Key Responsibilities
  • Develop requirements and direct others to perform design and theory research and lab testing tasks as task lead
  • Mentor others in developing methods and expertise in broad areas of design, theory, and testing as task lead
  • Document work of design, theory, and test in written and presentation form as team lead; Coordinate documentation inputs from team
  • Primary lead on the development of whitepapers and proposals in research areas of expertise.
  • Primary lead on sponsors and potential sponsors engagement.
  • Primary author of entire technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Designing and developing novel component technology to support antenna and phased-array systems
  • Performing high-fidelity modeling and simulation of antennas and their performance within radar systems
  • Testing and evaluating electromagnetic performance of antennas and supporting components
  • Prototyping phased-array antennas
  • Assessing foreign phased-array radar systems
  • Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree and 7 or more years of experience in antenna design, prototyping, and analysis
  • Involvement in the development of a phased array antenna system used in radar or communications
  • Experience leading technical teams on an applied research project
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • 10+ years of experience working with phased array antenna systems
  • Demonstrated successes in novel antenna development or application
  • Experience leading technical projects and authoring white papers and proposals
  • PhD degree

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics and Computer Science.
  • 7 years of related experience with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics and Computer Science.
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics and Computer Science.
  • U.S. Citizenship Requirements

    Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.
