The School of BioSciences was formed in 2015 through the amalgamation of the School of Botany and the Departments of Genetics and Zoology thus bringing together a critical mass of 160 Academic staff and 240 Research Higher Degree students undertaking world class teaching and research in the biological sciences. Academics within the School are aligned to 2 research domains - Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology. Through cross-disciplinary collaborations within the School and with external partners the School is a major recipient of grant and contract funding.

About the Role The position will involve an enthusiastic education researcher with a keen interest in assessment design, evaluation, and the use of ePortfolios to support student visibility of learning. With a strong background knowledge in assessment design and evaluation, the incumbent will also be experienced in scholarly approaches into the method and practice of teaching.

The appointee will assist in the design and evaluation of assessment reforms targeting the development of both disciplinary and generic skills in majors taught by the School of BioSciences. This will involve conducting curriculum mapping to identify and evaluate opportunities to scaffold student development of data analysis skills, incorporating evidence-based reasoning and critical thinking, across a suite of well-designed assessment and feedback regimes.

In addition, the project involves developing, implementing and evaluating a framework for using ePortfolios as learning journals to allow students to capture, evaluate and critically reflect on feedback from assessments and vertically track their skill development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing approaches to collect feedback from academic teaching staff and students on current and proposed assessment regimes
  • Managing timelines and work effectively alongside academic staff and learning designers to meet the objectives of the project
  • Contributing to a range of administrative functions, including those connected with educational research responsibilities and the conduct of the academic affairs of the School
  • Participating in School meetings, seminars and the School of BioSciences educational research and teaching communities of practice
  • About You You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and possess the organisational skills, including the capacity to plan your own time. You will have the initiative in both independent and team-based decision making and the ability to interact productively with other academic and professional staff and to contribute constructively to the activities and administration of the School, the Faculty and the University. Experience in designing educational research surveys and/or using validated instruments is desirable but not essential.

    You will also have:

  • A PhD in educational research, or a PhD in a STEM discipline coupled with formal training in education
  • A demonstrated ability in educational research design and data analysis
  • Sound knowledge in assessment design and feedback
  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum mapping or development in undergraduate and/or graduate subjects and courses
