Your new role Join our innovative and dynamic Learning Analytics team as an Education Data Scientist and help revolutionise the way we use data to enhance the student learning experience at Curtin. You will play a key role in implementing, promoting, and supporting the adoption of new applications that have the potential to transform the way our academic teaching staff use data to engage students at scale.

We are seeking a highly motivated and tech-savvy individual with a passion for data and a desire to make a difference in education. Our small team is working on cutting-edge data analytics and software solutions for learning and teaching, and we need someone who can both develop and implement these solutions and interact with our users. Strong problem-solving and technical skills, as well as excellent communication and collaboration abilities, are a must.

In this role you will…

  • Partner with teaching areas to understand their needs and identify opportunities for data analytics to add value.
  • Prepare and clean data sets for analysis, modelling, and deriving actionable insights.
  • Identify and utilise suitable technologies, tools, and algorithms to support learning and teaching activities.
  • Empower teaching areas by providing training and support on data analysis techniques and tools.
  • Derive credible insights from the data and use best coding practices to generate reproducible work.
  • Identify analytics opportunities to improve teaching delivery and maximise student learning outcomes.
  • Translate insights into actions by working with teaching areas to develop and implement solutions.
  • Build and maintain data tools, pipelines, and infrastructure to support data analysis efforts.
  • Collaborate with the team to improve our systems and processes, including requirements definition, prototyping, design, coding, testing, deployment, support, and maintenance.

    • We are looking for someone with…

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Proficiency in at least one analytics scripting language (we code Python).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data collection processes and the manipulation and analysis of information to extract value.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to understand and effectively tackle challenging problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to non-technical clients and to consult and liaise with personnel across all levels and disciplines.
  • Bonus points for experience in learning analytics, educational data mining, Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard or Canvas), or Student Management Systems (e.g., StudentOne).
  • Teaching or learning design experience would be a big plus, as would experience with AWS.
